I saw this pleasant adaptation of the Peter Mayle book many years ago on television and thought it quite good. The book, as is usual, was better (more nuanced, detailed, etc) but the adaptation I thought worked. This disc, however, does not work. This is a "shortened version" and is, quite simply, awful. I would have never purchased this had I realized that this was an abridged version. Many characters and story lines appear out of the air, and then some disappear as quickly. I sat down to watch this with my wife thinking it could be something that we could both like. We were both sorely disappointed and, in fact, she chould not begin to follow what was going on and who was who in this extremely choppy "short" edit. I would say, avoid at all cost and find a complete full-length version. John Thaw and Lindsay Duncan give enjoyable and often very quietly funny performances that deserve to be seen as intended. I do not believe I saw anywhere mentioned when I purchased this disc that this was a modified or edited version and I am clearly not very happy with my purchase. I hope to find a complete version of this to share with my wife. Better luck next time, I guess.

ruined by editing 27 May 2011
By penfold
there is little to say here, other than the brilliant work has been hacked to bits in some editing suite and something like a third of the original footage is missing from this version. I can't recommend it on this basis and suggest buyeys seek alternative versions. However those who do buy the unmolested version I am sure will not be disappointed as its well written and John Thaw, as far as i'm concerned, never did anything bad and is well supported by Lindsey Duncan and a host of French supporting actors, all shot in a superb location

A place to remember 18 May 2009
Having read the book - in Provence -, this year, I wanted to see the TV program which I had never seen before, as soon as I came back to London. Indeed Provence is one of the most beautiful places in Europe and the book and the TV program have put Provence in the tourist map of the South of France. The food, the wine, the residents all contribute to a memorable experience and the DVD certainly gives you a taste of what life is like in Provence. I would reccomend this DVD to anybody who appreciates good food, wine and beautiful landscapes.

Peter Mayle retires with his wife to France and gets embroiled in village life. Well acted and funny. Classic John Thaw.

Learning French with humour
It is well done. The conversation is in English or French with little translation of what is being said. It is a great way to learn a language and to also feel the Provence. Read more

Dire
It has been quite a while since I've seen a written work abused as thoroughly as in this television adaptation. It is just insulting to the audience. Avoid.
