Book Description

Jason tumbles into a quest to save a magical in this #1 New York Times bestselling start to Brandon Mull’s Beyonders fantasy series.

Jason Walker has often wished his life could be a bit less predictable—until a routine day at the zoo ends with Jason suddenly transporting from the hippo tank to a place unlike anything he’s ever seen. In the past, the people of Lyrian welcomed visitors from the Beyond, but attitudes have changed since the wizard emperor Maldor rose to power. The brave resistors who opposed the emperor have been bought off or broken, leaving a realm where fear and suspicion prevail.

In his search for a way home, Jason meets Rachel, who was also mysteriously drawn to Lyrian from our world. With the help of a few scattered rebels, Jason and Rachel become entangled in a quest to piece together the word of power that can destroy the emperor and learn that their best hope to find a way home will be to save this world without heroes.

Product Description

Review

"Mull elevates the genre, pairing humorous and imaginative scenarios with intelligence and well-written dialogue . . . With "Beyonders," Mull has taken the tried-and-true quest genre and reinvigorated it with a dense but extremely well-written follow-up to his bestselling "Fablehaven" series."

3.0 out of 5 stars The Beyonders a World without Heroes 6 April 2011
By Avebury
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
The Beyonders, its written with Brandon Mulls usual humor but fablehaven it isn't. I was more than a little disapointed it took several chapters to really get the story going. I found it to be very tedious in places and the action was over all to quickly followed by rather a dull trudge to the next action bit. Maybe the next book will tidy it up. If you loved fablehaven and the other fablehaven books I think like me you will be a little disapointed. Sorry Brandon Mull.

5.0 out of 5 stars Courtesy of Teens Read Too 14 Jun. 2011

Gold Star Award Winner!

Jason's job at the zoo was dull. Until a hippo swallowed him.

Instead of dying, he was transported to another world. A place known as Lyrian that is ruled by an evil wizard named Maldor. There's only one way to stop Maldor: speaking a word of power . . . but the word must be discovered one piece at a time.

Jason soon discovers a girl named Rachel was also drawn into Lyrian. Together, they set out on a dangerous quest to discover the word and destroy Maldor - unless he destroys them first.

I fell in love with Mull's writing in the FABLEHAVEN series and THE CANDY SHOP WARS, and this first book of the BEYONDERS didn't disappoint me. I found myself pulled into Mull's world just as easily as Jason and Rachel were pulled into Lyrian, but unlike the characters, I didn't want to leave. The plot twists and dangers had me holding my breath . . . especially Macroid.

WOW!! I can't wait for the next book in this fantastic new series.

5.0 out of 5 stars I'm in my mid-20's & loved it! 9 Oct. 2012
By pargypu
Format:Paperback
Once I started reading this I honestly couldn't put it down. It's adventurous, something is always happening, you turn a corner there's action, turn another, have some more! It is a young adults book but it kept me very entertained on holiday and I intend on reading the next book immediately. It's a pretty meaty book too and I liked the weird elements such as there being a Blind King, or being swallowed by a hippopotamus, random men living in cliffs by the sea, people who can take apart their bodies and put them back together again. So random, it really enabled my imagination!

Give it a go if you're a Tolkien fan and like supernatural elements in a book. This is the first I've read of Brandon Mull but I'd like to give the Fablehaven series a go too.

3.0 out of 5 stars Nice 3 July 2012
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Its a nice story, i'm only half way through mostly because i've been distracted by other novels and books to read - but that doesn't mean I don't like it just that I have the concentration span of a goldfish.
