On this album Phineas Newborn leads two trios. These are not "regular" groups but brought together for the puroses of recording only. The first trio features Paul Chambers and Philly Joe Jones from the then Miles Davis quintet, the second Sam Jones and Louis Hayes from Cannonball Adderley's quintet.

Phineas has been compared to Art Tatum because he has the ability to play fast. He often received unfavourable criticism for this, and some of his music was regarded facile. He reacted badly to this criticism and fell into depression resulting in some lengthy stays in hospital. This means he is recorded less than he deserves.

This treasure has a fine selection of tunes (none "originals") of varying pace and emotion. We have Gillespie's Latinesque "Manteca" and Strathorn's "Lush Life" along with tunes by Parker, Rollins, Silver and others.

This album deserves to be much better known. I give it 4 stars simply because in the great world of jazz recordings there a few better. 4 stars is a great compliment. It is a delight to listen to, and a perfect showcase for one of jazz's greatest pianists.
