Book Description

1 April 2000
Sweeping us into glittering, intrigue-riddled Elizabethan England, bringing to vivid life an actual heroine in the queen's court, New York Times bestselling author Virginia Henley blends rich historical detail with sumptuous romance in her latest novel--a dazzling feast of romantic fiction....

Young Bess Hardwick knew that the only way to escape a commoner's life was to serve in a noble family and marry well. So the headstrong beauty set out for London and the Tudor court, the arena for the richest, most ambitious men, none more powerful than the four men who would claim her. None more dangerous than Princess Elizabeth, who made Bess friend, confidante, then lady-in-waiting in her own glittering court...

Dangerously seductive, William Cavendish, the king's dashing financial adviser, vowed to have Bess at any cost. Frail, adoring Robert Barlow offered a marriage she couldn't refuse. Newly crowned Queen Elizabeth bade her marry courtly Sir William St. Loe. But reckless passion drove Bess into the arms of George Talbot, the devastating Earl of Shrewsbury, whose wicked daring ignited in Bess the passion of a lifetime--even as it sparked the jealous interest of the most perilous ally of all: the Virgin Queen....

Actually 2 and a half stars...

One must have a rather mediocre knowledge of English history to state, as the previous reviewer, that history in this book overshadows fiction. If you love HISTORY, but never heard of Elizabeth the Great, King Harry and Bloody Mary, I would NOT advise you to read this book - for England of the 16th century serves only as a stage for mental and bodily passions of Ms Elizabeth Hardwick. Appearance of this great persons are fragmentary, and descriptions of their behavior, characters and manners made me often smile (e.g.to hear Elizabeth Tudor conversing about masturbation, or, which was worse, for is not a historical fact, her maing love to Thomas Seymur e.g.), because before I read half-a-dozen non-fiction books about them. In short, the book might have well went on without them - if you use names and true dates of events for some characters, it does not make your book true historical fiction!

As for the book, much more pages are occupied by colourful descriptions of Elizabeth Hardwick's dresses (and underwear), wall-shattering orgasms, and of course, her four husbands (of whom two, as usually in such books, were weak and impotent). Author's obsession with Elizabeth's breasts is bordering on unhealthy. Scene of making love in Tower cell seemed to be completely irrelevant. Unfortunately, the book being "historical" fiction, in the afterword the author did not mention anything about the end of Ms Hardwick, for she lived in her 80s (and her character deteriorated with years) and she was also involved in plot with Mary Tudor.

In general, I took this book as a lollipop after generous helping of exquisite sweets - it simply can't be compared with serious historical fiction, but you can read it for fun.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Woman of Passion is the best yet! 20 July 1999

Format:Hardcover
Virginia Henley has really outdone herself with her latest Elizabethan A WOMAN OF PASSION. This book covers a vast sweep of history detailing not only four monarchies, but four marriages for the strong, vibrant heroine, Bess of Hardwick. The well-researched history is blended seamlessly with four sensual love stories. Virginia Henley never disappoints me. No one, but no one writes historical romance like she does. She stands above the rest of the pack in sheer talent and creativity! A Woman Of Passion is a MUST-READ for anyone who loves history or historical romance.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good read with emotional depth 9 Oct 2000
By A Customer
Format:Mass Market Paperback
AS a reader who was seriuosly put off by Kitty's multiple lovers in the book 'Enticed', i was extremely surprised to discover this book to be enjoyable and emotional. It is true that Bess has more than one lover, which may dissuade romantics like me from purchasing it. However, each character is throroughly explored through Henley's rich narrative and dialogue, and the book takes on a persona of an epic rather that her straighforward love story. The reader actually experiences the touching losses that Bess survives, and it really is a bewitchng book. It has a depth to it that her other books do not covey, largely due to the death of her lover which hasn't been explored in her other novels. This is a very lovely story, and highly re-readable
