In the winter of 1849, Florence Nightingale was an unknown 29-year-old - beautiful, well-born and deeply unhappy. After clashing with her parents over her refusal to marry, she had been offered a lifeline by family friends who suggested a trip to Egypt, a country which she had always longed to visit.

By an extraordinary coincidence, taking the same boat from Alexandria was an unpublished French writer, Gustave Flaubert. Like Nightingale, he was at the crossroads in his life that was to lead to future

acclaim and literary triumph. Egypt for him represented escape and freedom as well as inspiration.

But as a wealthy young man travelling with male friends, he had access to an altogether different Egpyt: where Nightingale sought out temples and dispensaries, Flaubert visited brothels and harems.

In this beguiling book, Anthony Sattin takes a key moment in the lives of two extraordinary figures on the brink of international fame, and provides a fascinating insight into the early days of travel to one of

the greatest tourist destinations on the planet.

Review

Anthony Sattin's study itself has a dreamlike quality . . . he movingly reminds us of how, in the midst of life, those destined for greatness have no more idea where they are going than the rest of us. (Sunday Times )

It is a tribute to Sattin's knowledge of Egypt and his skill as a writer that he makes this counterpoint narrative seem so effortless. His protagonists circle without ever touching in a dance through the desert. (Independent )

Running beneath this cavalcade of visionary incidents and skilfully realised tableaux is a subtext about travel as a mystical dislocation. (Telegraph )

In this entertaining book Sattin makes some important points on the intellectual, emotional and spiritual development of his immortal subjects. (Mail on Sunday )

Sattin has written a brilliantly assured experiment in biography, a triumph of the historical imagination. Convincingly researched, informed by an unobtrusive first-hand knowledge of Egyptian places, compellingly skilful in the writing, the whole story is illuminated by Anthony Sattin's delicately perceptive sense of character in action. (Literary Review )

5.0 out of 5 stars Anthony Sattin: Winter On The Nile 6 May 2010
Format:Hardcover
I read this book after seeing wonderful review in The Literary Review. Winter On The Nile has style and substance, capturing two mercurial characters (in Florence Nightingale and Flaubert) before they were famous.Book is accessible, one doesn't really have to know about the subject and period to enjoy Winter On The Nile, but there is also enough original research to suggest that Mr Sattin has shed new light upon his subjects for the experts as well.A superb book. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Sentimental and Enjoyable Journey. 8 May 2010
Format:Hardcover
The vistas and scents of 19th century Egypt come alive in this elegantly written book. So too, thanks to quotations from letters, do the voices of Florence Nightingale and Gustave Flaubert resonate and enchant - the former seemingly on a spiritual journey, the latter on a sensual one.
Anthony Sattin's affection for his two differing subjects is clear - as is his original research. The young Florence Nightingale is vivacious and attractive - and Flaubert is wonderfully mercurial, a poet in one letter, a bawd in the next.
Loved this book - part history, part biography, part travelogue.

The Cover instantly wants one to read the book. Copy of writing very good. Photographs excellent and in silky not matt. The content is wonderful, from when Nightingale and Gustave Flaubert arrived in Alexandria in 1849 seperately subsequently travelling up the Nile but never met. Some contents of her letters to her mother are in this book.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Winter on the Nile 4 Mar 2012
Format:Paperback
A very enjoyable read and very informative on the early travels in Egypt. It's all the more interesting as there are two parallel stories and it's not too heavy and is well written . I like books by this author very much.

5.0 out of 5 stars Winter on the nile 10 Jun 2010
Format:Hardcover
I saw this book advertised in a national paper and decided to buy it. I adore Egypt and have studied it at evening class for 4 years and have made many happy sightseeing visits. This book appears to be an interesting slant on the subject being shown through the eyes of Florence Nightingale and Gustave Flaubert on their travels there in 1849. It will be interesting to read how some things have changed over the span of a century and to share their sense of wonder I still feel whenever I visit.I shall read it whilst in Italy this summer and maybe wish I was there !!

1.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing 24 Nov 2010
Format:Hardcover
The idea of linking Nightingale and Flaubert in this way must have seemed a good one. Sattin has produced a fairly readable story, but has failed to add anything new of significance in the telling. The Nightingale material is taken from her biographers, Woodham-Smith (1950) and Bostridge (2008), sometimes almost verbatim, while the author can find no evidence that his heroine and hero actually met on their trip up the Nile. You would make much better use of your time in reading the letters of Nightingale and Flaubert about their respective journeys.

5.0 out of 5 stars A fascinating read 31 Mar 2013

I enjoyed reading this as I floated down the nile in February 2013. It was interesting to see how the area had changed or not since Florence Nightingale and Flaubert's time. An easy read.
