This is the first book by Ruth Hamilton that I have read and I will certainly be reading more. This is a very real and touching story of child abuse amongst other things. I certainly felt that anyone having suffered the trauma of abuse could certainly relate to Annie, the character in this book. A wonderfully written story that shows that lifes greatest hurdles can be overcome.

If this book had not been recommended to me by a friend I would probably never have read it: the cover and blurb certainly belie and in no way reflect the powerful storyline. Very well written, the issue of living with and surviving abuse is brought to the fore in a way which shows that you can indeed emerge from these circumstances as a stronger person. The only thing that spoiled it for me was the ending - just a little too perfect for me, but that's a small price to pay for having read such a wonderful book!

I was really surprised by this book. It was nothing like I imagined after seeing the cover, which I do not think does it any justice at all. I wouldn't normally read anything with a disturbing storyline but this was so well written I couldn't put it down. The characters are charming, especially Annie Byrne and I laughed out loud on more than one occassion. This is one book I will be keeping on my bookshelf to read again and I plan on reading more Ruth Hamilton as soon as possible!

I love this woman's ability to draw me into a story where I can relate to the time and events in most of her tales. I can also sympathise with many of her characters. They are real!
