...This book can be seen as a call to arms to the poets of the world and those who have forgotten how to be poets.
Reminiscent of Kahlil Gibran in the sweeping scope of his vision, Ben Okri writes with a passion for language which cannot help but sweep the reader up in his grasp. Okri speaks to our hearts without weighing us down with an authorial preaching. Okri speaks of engaging actively with the world, of constant questioning, of fighting for and standing up for our dreams and underlying this is deep and abiding love and compassion for this mixed up world.
A Way of Being Free is a series of essays which will bring lightness to your step, remind you of the beauty of life and bring greater determination battling against rigid forms of thinking which would control and sap meaning from our lives. A Way of Being Free can act as a timely reminder for what you already know, a book to pull out to recharge your psyche and shake cobwebs off spirit. It is a manifesto for revolution in the most joyous, gentle ferverent and passionate of ways
Now that I have read A Way of Being Free I have another tome to turn to when the days are grey, I have further drive to embrace this life with both hands and a book to loan and share with people I care about. And now that I have had a taste of Ben Okri's work I will go out and read his fiction, if it is half as good as his essays I am in for a treat.
