When you open this book to begin reading, make sure the kettle is off, the children are picked up from school and that you don't have any urgent appointments. Eileen Ramsay has crafted another of her engrossing stories that sweep you into another world. From war torn Italy to modern day Edinburgh, the story weaves its magic. You sit reading until someone taps you on the shoulder and asks why the children are still at school. You put down the book, get the children and drive back home, hurrying to find your place and re-enter the novel.
It is a true rainy day read. Eileen is a worthy successor to writers such as Rosamunde Pilcher.

Sophie Winter was once married to a wealthy, sexy, gifted pianist; the younger son of an Itallian Contessa who lives in the castle that dominates the Tuscan village in which Sophie's parents own a home.
Unfortunately Sophie was naive and vulnerable and the marriage breaks up after 5years. She leaves Italy for Edinburgh and swears never to return.
However, her sister is getting married in Tuscany and Sophie cannot let her down. she returns to the village.
Old wounds are opened, new ones created, while echoes of the war still reverberate in modern day Italy.
My daughter recommended this book and I'm sure she'd have given it 5 stars. Unfortunately I found the first half rather slow and the second half a bit predictable.
I'd class it as a lightweight summer read with an "unputdownable" last 100 pages and I'd recommend it on that basis.

There's something to be said about a book that captures the nuances of everyday life, the heartbreak and betrayal of human beings as a whole, and the redeeming power of love. Eileen Ramsay has crafted a story about a woman that could be any one of us, and shown us that life doesn't have to end when your heart gets broken. Even more so, the miseries and deceptions that are the typical family dynamic show that all of us have the power to forgive almost anything, even when forgiving seems so hard to do.
For Sophie Winter, her well-paying job in the Scottish Parliament is something to take pride in. So is her active social life. Sophie never lacks for companionship, whether it be of the friendly or romantic variety. To many, she has almost the perfect life-except for the scandal of her divorce, five years ago, from famed pianist Raffaele de Nardis. The world watched in shock when Raffaele and Sophie divorced, and Sophie, although she won't want to admit it, will be the first to tell you that she's never been the same since.
When a family wedding forces Sophie's return to Italy , memories inundate her regarding her marriage to Raffaele. When the pianist himself shows up to play at the wedding reception, Sophie attempts to show no feelings to her ex-husband, or the woman who hangs on his arm. Only Sophie and Raffaele know the true reasons behind their divorce, and as the story unfolds, we learn that even Raffaele was left in the dark about certain facts and situations.

This story really touched my heart,and held me spellbound.I lived the story with Sophie,and related to her family.
My goodness, the family were certainly hard work.Both families, in fact, were so manipulative,I am surprised that Sophia coped as well as she did.
The Italian country side was so real,and the characters finely drawn.I loved this book and will keep it in my collection.
I can hear all the beautiful music in my mind when I think of this book,so thank you Eileen Ramsay.
