I was drawn to reading `A wartime Nurse` because the illustrated cover of Nurse and child stirred in me a rich exploration of emotions.
This book would make an ideal gift for someone who has worked or does work in the Nursing Profession or who has an interest in such novels.
I found it to be a true to life account of my nurse and midwifery training in the late 1950`s and early 1960`s.
The novel is based in the North and details the gritty reality of war and post war England.
The writing has a Northern wit and sense of humour throughout, which I found enjoyably entertaining; a page turner.
I would thoroughly recommend this book, it is an excellent read.

"A Wartime Nurse" was a book which I did enjoy though not as much as other books I have read based on this period of time. The book was based on the life of Theda Wearmouth and we first meet her in 1936 where she is swimming with her brothers and sister when an accident takes place. This accident is when Theda saves Joss's life and brings a bond between this brother and sister which cannot be broken even during the harder times of Theda's life later on in the book when she learns not all her family can be depended on.
We mainly learn of Theda's life through the second world war and a few years afterwards. The main area where the story is based in the old hospital in Bishop Auckland in County Durham where Theda worked through the second world war. The hospital was previously a workhouse hospital which became a general hospital serving the people of South West Durham. During the war part of it became the medical wing for the prisoners of war.
Theda lived with her father Matt a coal miner, her mother Bea, her brothers Joss, Frank and Charles(mainly known as Chuck) and Sister Clara in a mining village called Winton. Theda trained to be a nurse at Newcastle and loved the life of a nurse. We also learn of how hard a miners life was at that time and especially how dangerous it was.
Theda clearly loved her patients as they loved her. No matter who her patients where she loved nursing them and she nursed them as she would have nursed her own family. This was the case until her fiancee was killed in action and she was sent to work on the prisoner wing of the hospital. We learn of how Theda deals nursing those men she held responsible for killing the love of her life and also she has to work alongside a German Major as he was a doctor but also a prisoner of war. It was interesting to read how she treated the German prisoners in no way different from she treated her other patients but this did not mean she had to like them.
The author tells us how Theda learns to love again while making mistakes along the way but instead of running away from her mistakes she deals with them in her own courageous way.
It was an interesting book and showed good detail of the medical treatments of that time and how well the German prisoners of war were treated compared to the British Prisoners of War(The treatment of British prisoners of war is not mentioned in anyway in this book). The one thing other readers should note, the book was previously published back in 1997 under the Authors other name Una Horne with a different title "A Time to Heal" A Time to Heal. This was not explained in the description or anywhere in the outside of the book. It was written in small writing within the book. I felt this would be disappointing to readers who had already read the book previously. This could have been easy explained just by saying the author was also known as another name.
The writer tells a good story and she does keep the reader entertained though at times I felt it was slow and she dragged it on at times. Though one thing I felt the Author did her research before writing the book and you can also tell she was a nurse herself in the way she clearly explains the medical jargon in a way that anyone with no medical experience will understand what is happening.
If the reader wants a nice easy going book with a nice romance with heartache along the way this book will fill a few hours. But if you want a book full of excitement this book is not for them.

An interesting story which brings back many memories of life during the 2nd World War.A book I will be loaning to friends!
