Review

'an entertaining read . . . an enjoyable romp.' (Historical Novels Review )

Praise for David Wishart:
'Like Chandler’s Marlowe, Corvinus wisecracks his way through a weary world of murder and intrigue until he hunts down the truth. A taut thriller in which ancient Rome springs to life' (The Times )

'Innate humour and pace carry one through to the tragi-comic climax' (Irish Times )

'It is evident that Wishart is a fine scholar and perfectly at home in the period' (Sunday Times )

'Wishart creates a pungent, throbbingly vibrant Rome' (Highland News Group ) --This text refers to the Paperback edition.

The Historical Novels Review

'an entertaining read . . . an enjoyable romp.' --This text refers to the Paperback edition.

By J. Chippindale TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:Hardcover
A book on Ancient Rome whose main character has the mannerisms and vocabulary of an American Private Eye takes a little getting used to, but the chemistry seems to work very well.
Marcus Corvinus the sleuth in this story is taking a break in the country for a couple of days to visit his step-daughter and is also partaking of as much of the local vintages as possible. Trouble follows this man around and it is not long before there is a murder on his doorstep. One of the candidates for the local election comes to an unsavoury end. Marcus is obviously the first person they call on as his reputation for solving crimes has gone before him. He is ably assisted by his well bred and intelligent wife Perilla. The background to all the Corvinus books are well researched and for all those readers who are interested in that period of time, you feel as though you are there with the senators, gladiators and wine shop owners. a very good read.

One of his best 16 Feb 2008

Format:Hardcover
One of my favourites in the series. Corvinus, on holday with Perilla and Marilla at Aunt Marcia's place in the Alban Hills, gets caught up in the festering resentment of many Albans towards the Roman conquerors . The situation is deiberately reminiscent of relations between Scotland and England, and very acutely rendered. But the star of the book could well be Marilla's pet sheep Dassa, a sheep of unusual talents who rivals Corvinus in his own area of expertise...
