David Cohen is a potter of genius and his works over a period of many years place him alongside Hans Coper, Lucie Rie, Hamada, Bernard Leach, Elizabeth Fritsch. His creative insights and mature wisdom are reflected on every page of this gem of a book. Cohen knows exactly what he is writing about from his marvelous own ceramic works but also his awareness and profound knowledge of painting, sculpture and pottery in the context of the history of art and particularly the 20th century. His expertise in drawing, perceptive historical evaluation and the breadth of his knowledge has resulted in this lucid, practical and always imaginative visual approach to the language and artistic elements of design.
Everyone interested in this form of art should have this gem of a book. Very highly recommended.

Mediocre content and examples 9 Feb 2010
By Joshua P. Baker - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
I was hoping that this book would straddle the line between art and perception/cognition. The first couple of chapters in this book are somewhat useful, but overall the content was not very deep or coherent. Most of the examples and illustrations are very dry and even ugly, and the more attractive examples carry the least meaning in terms of visual language. You may find this book somewhat useful as a fine artist, because the book deals a lot with carrying a technique across multiple works to create a language pattern. If you are a design professional looking for a resource on visual communication, this is not the book for you.
