Product Description

Mr O'Loughlin’s first real or substantial collection of short prose, mostly written during the autumn of 1979, combines literary with philosophical themes in what is or became his characteristic approach to fiction. Surprisingly the overall result is not displeasing and, although the subject-matter and settings of one or two of the pieces are now slightly dated, the best of them retain a freshness and relevance to the contemporary and, we would guess, future world which should stand them in good stead for several years to-come. Of the eight examples included, we especially recommend the title piece, 'A Visit to Hell', as a reflection, albeit slightly distorted by literary licence, of contemporary life in all its diabolic frenzy and hellish cacophony! - A Centretruths editorial.

A fairly substantial collection of short prose - with little or no concession to telling a story - is crowned by the title piece, 'A Visit to Hell', which involves a nightmare in which the subject of the piece is driven off to meet 'the Devil', in what appears to be an underground vault given over to film shows or, in this particular case, to a film that 'the Devil' himself oversaw in the interests of illustrating the extent of his power over the contemporary world, with numerous examples of how it came to pass and what it exactly entails. Not the only work of diabolical imagination in this first real collection of John O'Loughlin's short prose, dating from 1979, it nevertheless stands out from the others both on account of its length - virtually that of a novella - and its setting, which owes more to dreams than to theology or myth.

'A Visit to Hell' by John O'Loughlin 6 Aug 2011

One day, out of the blue, a professor is abducted by servants of 'the Devil' and taken to his subterranean hideout where, to his great surprise, rather than being eaten alive or otherwise tortured, he is treated to a film depicting the devil's influence on contemporary life and made to 'eat his words' as to his prior preconceptions about such a theme - just one of the unusual stories that comprise John O'Loughlin's first substantial collection of short prose, most of which follow a similar Spengler-inspired pessimistic interpretation of contemporary life.
