Always on the lookout for something new and interesting I bought this on the strength of the above review, and having heard one or two comments about this singer but not remembering where. It is quite a surprising experience to listen to this album for the first time - Pete's voice is unique and harks back to country balladeers of the 40s and 50s. He sings in an almost falsetto but it isn't quite that - there are touches of early Dylan and Woody Guthrie and an amalgam of earthy country styles that ends up in his own very individual style. I would love to see him live to get more of a handle on this, as I'm not sure this album gives a true picture of him. It is very retro and almost verges on the pastiche, but just about pulls it off. For someone from Kent, it sounds like it was recorded in the dustbowl of the midwest, and that makes me slightly uneasy, I don't know why. Having said that, there are some great songs here and I'm enjoying it more with repeated listenings.
