Time Out

Everything is portrayed with a brilliance which makes all other travel-writing read like the blurb on the brochure. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Auberon Waugh, The Business Traveller

Norman Lewis is outstandingly the best travel writer of our age, if not the best since Marco Polo. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

A collection of Lewis' writings from '40s to the '80s, this covers some of his life as an officer for British Intelligence as well as his travels in South America.

This is unusual travel writing - he is an inquisitive man with a natural affinity and compassion for everyone he meets, from Sardinian bandits to South American indians.

All of his encounters are a fascinating insight, often of a world now gone (his visit to Ibiza before the influx of tourists, for example, is classic).

His prose is readable and affecting and this is a must for anyone who likes non-fiction.

This is the first Norman Lewis I've read and I'll be looking out for more. It's difficult to classify this book, but essentially they are first hand accounts of characters and experiences abroad. They are extremely well written, and accessible. Much of the book describes the lives of people in under-developed parts of the world, and Lewis deliberately seeks out the least accessible areas.
