Reviews

United Kingdom released, PAL/Region 2 DVD: LANGUAGES: English ( Dolby Digital 5.1 ), WIDESCREEN (1.85:1), SPECIAL FEATURES: Commentary, Deleted Scenes, Interactive Menu, Making Of, Scene Access, SYNOPSIS: Embedded for three years with the notorious Noonan crime family in Manchester, England, the journalist Donal MacIntyre - the British answer to Geraldo Rivera - became a willing conduit for the outsize egos and self-serving confessions of its members. As a result, "A Very British Gangster" plays less like a documentary than an E! exposé of lowlife skulduggery. Subtitled to ensure no wiseguy witticisms are overlooked, the movie attaches itself to the family's smirking, openly gay boss, Dominic, between whose shaved dome and prosperous belly beats the heart of a monster. Though convicted of bank robbery, assault and hijacking and charged with kidnap and torture, this self-styled "social worker" (settling neighborhood disputes is a sideline) offers protection, security and banking services to grateful locals. The film's director, however, has more colorful concerns. "There's a hint of lavender about you," he teases, eyeing Dominic's permanent posse of young hoodlums and attention to grooming. The statement introduces the movie's sole stab of tension as we ponder the likelihood of Mr. MacIntyre's imminent demise. SCREENED/AWARDED AT: Sundance Film Festival, ...A Very British Gangster

A bit desperate 20 Nov 2009
By Griffo
Format:DVD
Dominic Noonan cuts a bit of a sad figure in this film. His brother Dessie Noonan was a proper hard case, but Dominic just looks like someone who's trying too hard to be like his brother. He's too likeable as well, whereas Dessie is genuinely intimidating. Donal McIntyre battles desperately to make Dominic look hard, but in the end all the carefully cut footage of Dom's chav cronies posturing and squaring up to each other ends up looking like kids from a youth club disco who've had too many alcopops.

It's a good documentary if you want to see someone trying too hard to make a name for themselves (Noonan and McIntyre both), but with the death of Dessie Noonan, any real gangster would probably teach Dominic a bit of a lesson. Driving around sink estates in a 'P' reg white Volvo is not exactly the Krays.

Best quote: Donal McIntye to Dominic Noonan: "I can't help feeling there's something about you that's a bit 'lavender'". In other words, you're gay aren't you? (another world exclusine Donal!)

Rent it, rather than buying.

Very poor rubbish 25 Aug 2008
Format:DVD
Well obviosuly this chap is not a very succesful gangster as he spends most of his time in prison. The product does not live up to the hype. Real gangsters woudl turn in their graves at this rubbish. Its note worthy that the people appearing in the film are all 18 year old wannabe hard men. No self respecting hard man would go within a mile of this rubbish. Save your money dont buy this garbage.

Poor documentary 2 Aug 2011
Format:DVD
Another hilarious 'documentary' from Donal (superstar Journalist) and his latest topic - Gangster Dom Noonan from Manchester.
Donal hints that Noonan may have a penchant for men "in touch with your lavender side".

This award winning 'documentary' is an unintentional hoot with Donal (looking cool- sunglasses great hair style.. etc) following gangster Dom Noonan (drives an old Volvo) around Manchester with his gang of wannabe teenage gangsters. Scary ganster Dom spent over twenty years in prison. Nice life.

Great line - "I can't help feeling there's something that's a bit lavender about you Dominic"

Watch out John Pilger, here comes Donal MacIntyre.

interesting film which leaves you thinking about life in the uk
This film follows Dominic Noonan, a manchester enforcer. Although Noonan is hardly a Kray or Gotti or Al capone, he does seem to yield some influnce on his community. Read more
