A fine homage 6 Dec 2009
Format:Audio CD
Overseen by Lee Ritenour, who produced the album, its core crew comprises LR on guitar with Ray Parker, Jr. on rhythm guitar, Ricky Lawson (drums), Nathan East (bass) and Jochem van der Saag on keyboards, synthesizers and the programming of all sorts of clever sequenced sounds that add a special touch, if not strictly in keeping with the traditional Motown thing, then definitely adding here a contemporary, ah, twist. That having said, the roster of guest musicians is impressive to say the least ~ Bob James, Dave Grusin, George Benson (who sings on the slam packed opening arrangement of Inner City Blues), Mindi Abair, Gerald Albright, Chris Botti, Will Downing, Richard Elliot, Russell (Yellowjackets) Ferrante, Melvin Davis and even Peter White, who plays keyboards and bass as well as his signature acoustic guitar. Jerry Hey helps out with the brass arrangements

The track roster includes all sorts of well known Motown faves, amongst them Heard It On The Grapevine, Papa Was A Rollin' Stone, Just My Imagination and such like, so you know pretty much what you're going to get.

The album's only liability is its rather hard sound (maybe at the hands of mastering engineer Bob Hata) which is not only rather out of keeping with the traditional Motown sound but a bit wearing on the ears as well. But keep the volume in check and there's much to enjoy here.

Recorded at Lee Ritenour's own Starlight Studios, Blue Studios (also in Malibu) and Capitol in Hollywood by Don Murray (who also did the mixing), Eric Ferguson, Lee Ritenour and Jochem van der Saag.

A quality project all round, then, but let down a bit by the hard sound ~ which may or may not grate depending on your sound system.

Once again, a success!! 27 Sep 2003
By Nicholas Kalenze - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
This cd is incredible!! Once again Lee Ritenour, has produced a successfull album in the "twist of" series! All of the songs are superb, and there's so much to observe in the texture of these arrangements.

It's hard for me to pick a favorite track because I love them all! The stand outs to me are "Inner City Blues" with George Benson, "Creepin" with Bob James, "All This Love" with Gerald Albright, "Heard It Through the Grapevine" with Dave Grusin, and the last song, "Got To Be There," with Peter White.

What makes this record stand out is the arrangements of each track. These artists put their heart and soul into each song, and it really pays off. Motown music has really stood the test of time, and I think it's wonderful that these various artists pay tribute to America's greatest treasures in music!

If you love motown music, or any type of music with good grooves, and soulful melodies and harmonies, this is a MUST!!

Nick Kalenze.

Get you moving classics! 1 May 2004
By speechless - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
I was looking for some up beat contemporary jazz to add to my collection. While overall, this CD was slightly more mellow than I expected, it definitely did not disappoint. I just LOVE the arrangement of "I Heard It Through the Grapevine". "Papa Was a Rolling Stone" and "You Haven't Done Nothin" are fast becoming favorites. Lee Ritenour and the gang have done a great job of jazzing up these old favorites, and still allowing the feel created by Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, Smokey Robinson and the others come through.
Add this CD to your collection, give it a spin, and feel the groove. It has definitely made the favorites list in my collection.

Timeless Classic! 20 April 2006
By jazzy - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
Personally I think this is by far the best in Lee Ritenour's "A Twist of ..." tribute series and above of all, one of the best in all contemporary jazz. Lee did it again teamed with all top-notch musicians - it will just never go wrong with Bob James, Peter White, Chris Botti, Gerald Albright, and Lee himself! All Motown songs just keep your spirit rolling with different flavors of arrangements and rhythms. It's relaxing, upbeat, and unquestionably a timeless classic! Wish I could put a 6-star there!

Excellent job Lee!
