What a letdown! 10 Sep 2000
Format:Paperback
Having read and enjoyed "The Last Big Job," Nick Oldham's latest book, I was looking forward to "A Time for Justice," which is his first book. While both books had the same breathless, fast-paced quality, "A Time for Justice" was a great disappointment overall.

Here, in brief, are my criticisms of the book: 1. Too many ridiculous coincidences, which stretched credulity to the breaking point. 2. A great deal of gratuitous violence, including vivid descriptions of blood, guts, and exploding brains. 3. A great deal of gratuitous sex and sexual references (believe it or not, there is such a thing!). 4. Too many sappy, sentimental, unrealistic love scenes. (I thought that you Brits believed in leaving sappy sentimentality to us Yanks!)

In truth, some of these things were also evident in "The Last Big Job," but for some reason the book was a much better read overall. I'll soon be moving on to my next Oldham book. I hope it will be better than "A Time for Justice."

I have to say this author is a real find for me - I have just received the next book in this series and cannot wait to start it. I love his style of writing, he gives a voice to several characters who are all looking at the same events and heading towards the same conclusion but by different routes.

For those of you who like your crime - gritty and fast, you cannot go wrong. And if like me you are just "discovering" him - you've got a whole series to enjoy!

Nick Oldham has used his experiences as a police officer to describe the havoc which is caused by an american assasin (Ex US special forces) who is sent to Lancashire by his mafia boss to kill his rivals. Henry Christie a Blackpool Detective teams up with the FBI and brings the assasin to book. All goes well until he escapes and turns his attentions towards Christie-with only one thing on his mind-revenge.
