Book Description

Thought-provoking studies on our modern world by one of the leading literary figures of our time

Product Description

Booker-winning novelist and one of Britain's foremost poets, Ben Okri is a passionate advocate of the written word. In A Time for New Dreams he breaks new ground in an unusual collection of linked essays, which address such diverse themes as childhood, self-censorship, the role of beauty, the importance of education and the real significance of the recent economic meltdown.

Proving that 'true literature tears up the script' of how we see ourselves, A Time for New Dreams is provocative and thought-provoking. In an intriguing marriage of style and content, the concise but perfectly formed essays in this collection push the parameters of writing whilst asking profound questions about who we are and the future that awaits us.

Okri's insights 21 July 2011
Format:Paperback
Ben Okri is often remarkable in his way of expressing profound insights in simple language. The brevity is welcome in a world of verbiage overload. As a teacher of English, I would recommend Ben's book for use with students learning English as an additional language in many places. Most of the pieces are refreshingly compact and remarkably charged with meaning, phrases that are memorable. Give students some powerful, lyrical yet simple English instead of -- or as a respite from -- all the rubbish we tend to read, especially non-fiction. His short piece '10½' is a wonderful mediation on what students need for what Krashen and others call Free Voluntary Reading. A mini-primer on autonomous roads to enhanced literary. His visions for changing a few things in this world border almost on life beyond capitalism and consumerism. But Ben is not quite at that political point.

Not my usual read 6 July 2011
Format:Paperback
This is not my usual style of book at all but was given a copy in prpeation for teh Edinburgh International Book Festival.
I found there were two main styles of writing in this book, short essays and sections of numbered points.
I found it enjoyable in the main and thought provoking in places.
It may even lead me to pick up something else by the same author, which is surely a sign of success.

More than 20 short essays on vision, dreams, beauty, childhood, Africa 15 Jan 2012
By Iveta Kazoka - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
Five stars for idealism, for dreams, humanity, inspiration, drive to envision a better future. Each of the essays is very short, easy to read.

Some quotes from the book which could explain what makes it special:

1. "You are the real hope and possibility of the century. DO not accept any limitation on the definition of what is human, and what is possible to humanity... we are here on earth to serve humanity, to take the human possibility forward, to create a better world. We are here to grow, to learn, to share our light, our gifts, our love."

2. "A literature of childhood is an implicit criticism of the present. It can often be a quiet, decisive political act. It can be a scream woven into a melody, a beautiful song thrown into the face of tyranny."

3. "We stifle our most human thoughts. We silence our impulses to translate our sense of injustice into action. We sense something is wrong but we choose to be silent."

4. "Universities need to awaken students into becoming people who enrich the life of the planet."

5. "If one has not yet become oneself one cannot see the true self in others."
