Robert Westall does it again in this wonderful tale of a boy's experiences of the second world war. The writing is fluid and engaging, and the main character is, as always, multi-faceted and three-dimensional. Somehow, no matter how many wartime children's novels Westall writes: 'Kingdom by the Sea', 'The Machine Gunners' and 'Fathom Five' to name but a few, he always manages to make each one unique. Don't try to figure out how he does it - I gave up years ago. Just read and enjoy your trip to early nineteen-forties England.
