I would recommend this book to anybody who enjoys something slightly different. This book is written in the authors unique style. It is refreshing in its use of everyday expressions and language without the usual artistic embroidery used by so many better known writers. The book is full of keen observations regarding life in pre war Berlin and England, of which the author had first hand knowledge. The novel traces the complex and tragic life of Sophie Berglund and her slow disintegration into the nightmare world of drug addiction.
This book is a real credit to Lilli Palmer and one wonders whether she was first an actress and second a novelist or was it the other way around. She could paint too!!
If you enjoy this book I would also recommend Face Value and The Red Raven by the same author.
