So many times hype and hyperbole spoil your enjoyment of a special book, film, or record and so I'll try not to do the same thing here. I discovered Ane Brun by chance as one of several support acts of another artist earlier in 2006. Her songs and the atmosphere they created almost ruined the main act for me because they were so affecting and memorable. Ane's songs are shot through with melancholy mixed with wry humour and an openness that calls to mind artists such as Joni Mitchell, Jane Siberry and Mary Margaret O'Hara (co-incidentally all Canadian but the sisterhood of latitude perhaps comes into effect here!) Her guitar playing is densely woven and removes the need for heavy arrangements or 'orchestrations'; her voice mixes country, folk and soul inflections effortlessly and unselfconsciously; her songwriting has an amazing rightness to it that balances familiarity and surprise, bypassing novelty for the greater challenge of using traditional forms and making them new. Ane Brun is the real thing, a singer-songwriter of the first order. Having seen her live, I was worried that like so many other artists who create a powerful live presence with just a guitar, 'A Temporary Dive' would resort to 'meat-and-two-veg' rock arrangements to make Ane's skewed visions more mainstream and ordinary but it is happily not the case. The arrangements are often skeletal and delicate, allowing the songs to blossom very much as they did live, with the addition of occasional sparce effects and electronics, drums, strings or multitracked vocals. 'A Temporary Dive' is one of those albums that makes you open up to new music in the hope that you might find another one like it. In a word, wonderful.

My daughter bought me this album for Christmas 2006.Two months later and I have not gone one day without playing it.The first time I played it I knew that it was good. But with each play I just realised more and more that it was simply an exceptional album. Two solid months of playing it and not getting tired of it speaks volumes. She is quite simply an immense talent.Oh,how I hope that she comes to the UK to tour because I would love to see Ane live.I have around 800 albums but this would be in my top ten.

Ane Brun has been selling records and filling Stadia in Scandanavia for almost a decade, but despite having one of those unmistakable voices that once heard is never forgotten, writing brilliant, haunting, emotionally intellegent songs (almost exclusively in English)that linger at the back of the mind long after the music has stopped, she is still relatively unknown in the UK and elsewhere. A Norwegian, living in Sweden, Ane Brun is one of the most original, brilliant and underrated singer/song writing talents around, and Temporary Dive is as near perfect as any album could reasonably hope to be.

This was suggested by last.fm - and turned out to be a great album. Carries on the great tradition of female singer songwriters like Joni Mitchell et al. Good to know that 'real' music (played by people with genuine musical talent and passion) is still alive.
