This release, along with `Not A Little Girl Anymore' and the Mike Batt produced 'Hacienda View', is my favourite album from the much underrated singer songwriter.

Like 'Girl', 'Tear' sees Linda reunited with U.S. producer Bert DeCoteaux who gave the singer her biggest hit with `It's In His Kiss'. The album follows the same formula, mixing pop songs such as the catchy (and slightly frantic) `This Boy' with Linda's own, more laid back and soulful compositions including the poignant `Why Can't I Be The Other Woman' and melancholy`Sweet Heartache'. The combination works really well and De Coteaux manages to keep things commercial without compromising Linda's songwriter roots. This makes for a consistent and strong set.

Stand outs for me include the single `(Close The Door), Take Your Heart', originally recorded by Maxine Nightengale. This is a big ballad with soaring vocals, a rousing chorus and should have been a huge hit. Rare bonus cuts `I Can Take It' and 12" single `You Turned My Bitter Into Sweet', which saw Linda riding the `80s disco train, make this a must have for any Linda Lewis fan - thank you bbr !. Fingers crossed that the recordings which followed with her sisters Dee and Shirley will see the light of day of day soon.

A good package in terms of notes and the various additional tracks but sadly not a patch on Linda's earlier albums. She is truly a different artist by this stage. Linda was only involved in the writing of four of the 10 original album tracks and the production is decidedly 80s (synth drums and no passion) which really goes against the grain for me. It might be interesting to hear different takes on the tracks but then again the songs did not prove strong or popular enough for Linda to add to her live sets (see her two live CDs). My favourites are the songs that Linda wrote herself.

Nice album, too bad the bonus tracks are from vinyl sources ! You can hear the needle in the groove. BBR this can be done much better !

The re-issue of A Tear And A Smile is the first Linda Lewis cd I ever bought. The sound quality is excellent, and the 10 song (including the bonus tracks) are amazing!!! My faves so far were "Why Can't I Be The Other Woman", "Destination Love", "I Can't Get Enough", "I Am What I Am", and the 12" Groove Mix of "Class/Style (I've Got It)". This album is a must-have for those who love Linda Lewis' music.
