Now, I have been listening to Martin and The Cleaners From Venus (his band project) for some 15 years or so. Yes, I am an unabashed Martin Newell fan. That said, this is a top-notch batch of tunes and his finest release since the highly acclaimed "Greatest Living Englishman", back in 1992 or whatever it was.
The lyrics show Martin coming to terms with his own late-middle age with a shrug and a middle finger to father time. And I can't help but smile at his attitude, because I cannot help but to hope that is what I am like in a few years.
Think of it as hanging out with your favorite uncle (who just happens to lead XTC) at the local pub. Singing to anyone who will listen that he is gonna rock no matter what anybody tells him.
Maybe it seems like I'm lingering too much on the message of "Wow! Look At That Old Man!" But no matter the song, that same attitude pervades the record. A reworking of the old Cleaners' tune "Stella and Charlie Got Married" is anotehr highlight.
And now I'm just rambling, but damn, he's a good songwriter.
