Book Description

29 April 2010
When dynamic, power-dressing Christie blows in like a warm wind to take over their department, five very different women find themselves thrown together at work. But none of them could have predicted the fierce bond of friendship that her leadership would inspire...Anna, 39, is reeling from the loss of her fiance, who ran off with a much younger woman. Her pride in tatters, these days Anna finds it difficult to leave the house. So when a handsome, mysterious stranger takes an interest in her, she's not sure whether she can learn to trust again? Then there's Grace, in her fifties, trapped in a loveless marriage with a man she married because, unable to have children of her own, she fell in love with his motherless brood. Grace worries that Dawn is about to make the same mistake: orphaned as a child, engaged to love-rat Calum, is Dawn more interested in the security that comes with his tight-knit, boisterous family? When a sexy, footloose rock singer catches her eye, will Dawn have the courage to follow her heart? At 28, Raychel is the youngest member of their little gang. And with a loving husband, Ben, and a cosy little nest for two, she would seem to be the happiest. But what dark secrets are lurking behind this perfect facade, that make sweet, pretty Raychel so guarded and unwilling to open up? Under Christie's warm hand, the girls soon realise they have some difficult choices to make. Indeed, none of them quite realised how much they needed the sense of fun, laughter, and loyalty that abounds when five women become friends. It's one for all, and all for one!

About the Author

Five-foot-tall Milly Johnson is a half Barnsley, half Glaswegian writer of greetings cards, novels and shopping lists featuring gin and buns. When not writing she is either reading, learning Italian, mixing with the Yorkshire glitterati, getting up the council's nose about a Dodworth Road Pedestrian Crossing or ironing school clothes. She lives with her two boys and a quartet of mad animals near her Mam and Dad in the middle of Barnsley, South Yorkshire.

5.0 out of 5 stars Knockout again Milly!! 2 May 2010
Format:Paperback
Milly Johnson writes about female friendship wonderfully, and although there are some awful men to be found within the pages of 'A Summer Fling', there are also some lovely blokes who turn up trumps.

Another hilarious foray into South Yorkshire life , where Barnsley must now be the Romance Capital of the UK. And it's down to this writer's efforts entirely. I expect to see a sign on the M1 pretty soon, which says 'Milly Johnson country'.

I have started a little shelf of Milly Johnson's books next to the bed so there will always be a perfect comfort-read close at hand. Please write faster Milly, so we can enjoy more of your books.

5.0 out of 5 stars The feel good factor in spades 4 May 2010
By Damaskcat HALL OF FAME TOP 50 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
I really enjoyed this book and was sorry when I turned the last page. What I like about Milly Johnson's books is that they're not set in London but in a town in Yorkshire - Barnsley. This one is about five women who work in the head office of a supermarket chain. Anna - suffering after her fiancé Tony leaves her for a younger model; Grace - married to Gordon; Raychel - married to Ben; and Dawn about to get married to Calum. The fifth person is their new boss - Christie - who makes a welcome change from the unpleasant Malcolm.

What dominates the book is the friendship which grows between the five women as lives and hopes start to unravel. This is a book which made me laugh out loud though it also made me cry. Above all it is hopeful. However bad your life may seem you never know what's just round the corner. Characters are believable and you can imagine meeting them in the supermarket queue or in the post office. You feel that if you met them in the street you'd recognise them instantly. Well written and fast moving `A Summer Fling' needs to be read accompanied by chocolate and a glass of wine. If you like Katie Fforde, Judy Astley, Erica James or Kate Harrison you will love this.

5.0 out of 5 stars A bit of Summer in a harsh Winter 8 Dec 2010
Format:Paperback
After the chill of Lapland in It's Cold Outside, and with the very cold winter weather, it was nice to warm up with A Summer fling. This book is ever so well written covering the highs and lows of the lives of five very different woman working in the same department. The catalyst, and best character, is new boss Christie who inspires a bond of friendship with Anna (devastated that her fiancé has run off with a younger woman), Grace (trapped in a loveless marriage), Dawn (insecure and engaged to a love rat) & Raychel (the youngest and supposedly in a cosy happy marriage). As a reader you become completely engaged in the stories of all the women and cry and laugh in equal measure. A large overall cast of characters (just like It's Cold Outside) but never too busy - will doubtless read again in the summer but it has warmed my heart on these long dark & cold winter evenings.

Book 5 of my 7 to read (see Listmania)
