Book Description

The author describes his return to carp fishing after a break of 45 years. Describing the experience as “like stepping out of a time machine” the author first had to grapple with the language being used to describe current techniques. Making a new life in France and Isolated from the influence of other carp fisherman, he used the resources of the internet to start his unique campaign of learning how to catch carp and trying not to break the bank at the same time. This is his story.

I purchased this as a book for my kindle, this was the first book i purchased and the book is very informative and is very well written, being a carp fisherman myself and having a limited budget it was nice to see people are inventive and creative in the way they approach all aspects of being a modern day carp angler on a budget

5.0 out of 5 stars A Steptoe Guide to Retirement? 15 Mar. 2012
By Alan C
Format:Kindle Edition
A Steptoe Guide to Retirement would be an equally valid title for this book, which is as much a philosophy on keeping active and inventive as it is about fishing. I must admit to being an ex colleague of Mik and am delighted to see that he is applying his talents to things much more useful and interesting than the mundane world of work.

From an angling point of view some of the purists out there will probably roll their eyes and suck their teeth, but Mik's methodical approach to analysing each aspect and overcoming each obstacle is a wake up call to anyone like myself who is also a recently returned fisherman, stuck in a bit of a groove and happy to carry on doing things just so because "that's how I've always done it".

However this short book is much more than just a book about fishing. It is proof that you don't have to just go with the flow, and you get the impression that Mik could have chosen just about any other subject at random and come up with any number of valid interesting alternative ideas.

Thoroughly recommended!

4.0 out of 5 stars A good fisherman's story ... 18 Feb. 2012
By Derek
Format:Kindle Edition
This is a well written and illustrated book, of equal interest to the complete novice and for the more experienced fisherman.

Not only does Mik cover the subject very well, but makes it entertaining at times - and demonstrates his innovative approach to all things. The read will teach you a completely new language - and you will learn about 'taking the boile', Carpe Farcie', 'building a jetty', importance of 'Jerusalem Artichokes', bottle spod and spodding, and Frolic biscuits ...!

I have known Mik for over 40 years, so was not surprised at his determination to make a lovely home in south-west France for his retirement with his wife - but also to conquer carp fishing in 'his lake'. For some ten years we were colleagues in a private Land Surveying practice, and his ability to spot problems and offer solutions were always in evidence. His method of taking aerial photographs is very clever idea.

I have happily remained in contact with him so that I can know of his latest enterprise - and his next book that hopefully is not far away !

Retirement has a different meaning for Mik....

1.0 out of 5 stars Not Great 2 April 2014
By Archie
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I was expecting more from this book after seeing the other ratings. I was hoping to read about the authors experiences whilst fishing in France, but there was little on this front. It was very low on content and I'm afraid I found myself skipping through what little there was as I personally found most of the material dull.

Some interesting ideas delivered often as a train of thought. Makes me almost look forward to the winter of playing with rig and bait ideas that lies ahead.

I'm not sure I will use all the techniques but this book certainly provides plenty of food for thought. I will definitely be trying some of the bait tips.
