I have to disagree with a previous reviewer who said this album is bland with no killer tracks. In my opinion, this is one of the best trance albums I've heard for a long time - proper old school trance - big build-ups, some but not too many vocals, thumping bass-lines - trance as it should be. It's the kind of album that makes you want to go for a run or drive your car. I've got ASOT 2007, 2008 and now this one. 2007 as many warned in their reviews is very poor - cetainly CD1 anyway - and is barely trance at all as far as I'm concerned. 2008 is a lot better but CD1, though enjoyable, is very chilled and full of vocals and again barely fits into the trance category. 2011 however is trance through and through. There's less of a difference between CD1 and CD2 than on some of the other albums and if anything it's a great gradual build from the start of CD1 all the way to the end of CD2. If I really want to be picky there's a couple of songs on CD2 that perhaps drift into the bland category but they are few and far between and are quickly forgotten when the next anthem kicks in. Overall I've no hesitation giving this 5 stars - genuinely is the best ASOT I've heard and am sure it will not disappoint real trance lovers.

We all know Armin is a top quality mixer and it is worth beginning this review by saying that this album is, unsurprisingly, mixed to perfection. If you are looking for a snapshot of trance in 2011, then this album is the first place to start every time, as the title `A State of Trance 2011' suggests.
In terms of song quality, taking all of the ASoT offerings, I feel that 2004-6 were better than albums that have gone since; whether, as another reviewer mentions, this is down to Armin's odd song choices or just what has been made in the trance society I don't know. Regardless, I was a little concerned that I would experience some disappointment again with 2011. However, the tracks on this album are, in my opinion, much better and have a certain class about them that the last few ASoTs appear to have lacked.
I think the main reason for this is the significant reducing of the number of tracks with vocals. What 2007-09 in particular seemed to have too much of, for me, was dominating vocals that often damaged what was a decent trance song underneath. I love vocals in trance, but only if they add to the song rather than killing it with overpowering tones. This has improved very much in 2011, and those songs that do contain vocals seem to be far mellower, with the voice integrating with the rest of the track rather than potentially destroying it. I think Armin has 'gone back to his roots' a little bit with these sort of selections - his recent artist album 'Mirage' was quite poor in my opinion, largely because of his new found love for the guest vocalist.
This said, I still don't think we get any true classics on this album, not in comparison to my two favourites 2005 and 2006 anyway. I still can't get enough of tracks such as '808,' 'Emotional Void,' 'Shipwrecked' and 'Your Loving Arms' today, whereas somehow I can't see this happening with tracks on this album. I guess only time will tell, and again, perhaps Armin's choice is dictated by what is out there, not by his selections.
It's worth a buy this one, and it is probably the best ASoT installation since 2006 in my opinion.

This is another solid collection of trance from AvB. However, for me, it loses a star because the inclusion of the awful Rex Mundi track 'Sandstone'. This edited(!) 6 minute opus is completely out of place with the feel of rest of the tracks on the first disc and, being in the middle, effectively splits an otherwise excellent set into two. It would sound better on a Hernan Cattaneo 'Sequential' mix, rather than here.

That blip aside (and ignoring some inane lyrics about 'where butterflies are free to roam' on Max Graham's 'So Caught Up') the rest of both discs is great and highly recommended.

Worth it purely for the 2nd CD
Not a fan of CD1 (apart from track 9) - 2nd CD much better. Normally go for compilations, this was a bit of a risk - I'd defo look at future States of Trance.
