To most, Mike Batt is known as: (1) creator of the best music to come from Wimbledon Common; (2) the writer of "Bright Eyes" and (3) the mentor of Katie Melua. There is, of course, so very much more to him than that, not least of which is his solo performance talents. This album is a most welcome release (a pre-release rough assembly was made available to his fans some months ago but this final mix is an improvement with two additional tracks - including "The Closest Thing To Crazy" added, no doubt, due to Katie Melua's huge hit with it - but, strangely, one - "I Dine Alone" - removed).

Some of his greatest compositions are included in this compilation - but now newly recorded with the composer himself on vocals throughout. In some cases this is a little pointless as the versions are so similar to the original releases (such as "The Walls Of The World" which was a Mike Batt vocal orginally) but in other cases it is very good to hear the new mixes. One or two tracks don't fare so well. For example, the saxaphone solo that I adore on "The Winds Of Change" has been replaced by a guitar solo - but, of course, that is just personal taste and opinion. I prefer the new version of "Love Makes You Crazy" (also Mike Batt vocals on initial release) which is somewhat less staccato than the original. Mike's own vocals replacing the ones we know so well are excellent on tracks such as "A Winter's Tale" (originally David Essex), "Caravan Song" (originally Barbara Dickson) and "I Feel Like Buddy Holly" (originally Alvin Stardust). In particular, though, the new arrangement (great piano use) and vocals on "The Closest Thing To Crazy" make it, in my opinion, superior to the already classic Katie Melua single.

It's quite refreshing to hear new arrangements of these songs with newly recorded vocals - his voice has changed a bit over the years, and I really enjoyed hearing what he sounds like now and how over time the way he has interpreted the songs has changed.

Admittedly, I was always curious about what he would sound like singing "Closest Thing To Crazy". Katie Melua's version is brilliant, but what a rare treat to hear it performed by the person that wrote it!

Fantastic album full of classic songs - highly recommended!

Mike Batt has written some truly great music over the past thirty-odd years and some pretty naff stuff. Unfortunately this collection has more than its fair share of the latter. Winter's Tale is a dreadful dirge and Feel Like Buddy Holly so corny I gag whenever I hear it. Also most of the new recordings in this collection are a little on the bland side, so even the good stuff like Soldier Song and Ride To Agadir sound washed out compared to the wonderful orchestrally OTT originals.

There should have been more up-tempo songs to balance the bland. Why wasn't Summer Time City included (after all, it is the only hit single he's had under his own name)? A Womble song or two would have livened things up.

Don't get me wrong, I've been a Mike Batt far for over thirty years and he's created so much great music in that time, but he ends up releasing...this! If I were you I'd forget this collection and buy The Winds Of Change (still available here on Amazon) - it's a much better representation of what he's capable, and contains the original (and mostly superior) recordings. Better still wait for his back-catalogue to be re-released on CD and buy the lot (check out dramatico.com for release dates).

I love this CD. Mike Batt has written so many lovely songs, and I like his uncomplicated delivery. He maybe doesn't have the strongest voice in the world, but it's in tune and unpretentious. I have hundreds of CDs, but I play this one as much as any in my collection. Great words and music.

Being an avid fan of 'The Hunting of the Snark', and more recently, Katie Melua, I felt that I must delve into more of Mike Batt. This was just what I wanted. So, all the tracks are not great, and Mikes pitch is somewhat unreliable.....but.... I'm over the moon with this selection. All sung by him and written by him. What an absolute utter talent. I just can't stop playing it.

If I weren't such a big Mike Batt fan I'd give this recording 0 stars as all it is is a rehash of his 2006 recording Bright Eyes with 2 new tracks on. However ther arrangements have been slightly altered and polished and there is more piano from Batt and what saves this recording from being banal is Ride to Agadir and the Katie Melua track included. Only for die hard fans. Please now re-release The hunting of the Snark and Watership Down soundtrack.
