Tremendously easy to read and yet a lot of facts are threaded through the story of James' 'affair' with the Sandhills area. I read it before a 1 week golf tour playing many of the courses whose history is charted through the book. Pinehurst has a real history and the richness of that history comes through extremely well. As a result the village shops, restaurants, bars - as well as the golf courses and Pinehurst itself - just meant so much more - definitely a 'must read' if you are a golfer visiting Pinehurst and have any interest in knowing something about it.

Good Read! 10 Feb. 2011
By JJB33 - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
Overall, I think this is a very good book. I have only a couple of minor issues. The first is that there is so much reference to the east coast states and the author's travels up and down between Maine and NC that I found myself trying to reference maps in order to get a sense of what his travels were like between his work locations, home, and rounds of golf (not from the area, so somewhat unfamiliar to someone who has never been)! Could have used some photos, maps, images to help paint the picture better of the area and some of the key spots referenced throughout the book. The second is that I thought there would be more about himself and his son then what there was; it could have been a bit more in depth about their relationship on and off the golf course, however, was good none the less.
Wonderful Style of writing 24 Aug. 2012

I enjoyed Dodson's writing style immensely. It reads like a personal letter to you the reader or a comfortable conversational story. I have his autographed prior book about golfing in Scotland with his dad but haven't read it yet.

I don't have a son, but my 14 year old daughter has become my golfing buddy. I can relate to this book as I watch her fall in love with the game.

You have to be a lover of the game to appreciate this book. Good thought line, but drags from time to time.

Great read, especially if you're from the area. Also a good history lesson.
