I hadn't come across Hilary Custance before but an acquaintance whose opinion I respect suggested that I get hold of a copy of 'A Small Rain', and I'm pleased that I took that advice. A refreshingly absorbing bitter/sweet non-genre, non-formulaic story that takes several strands and cleverly brings them together. I think what struck me most was the quality of the prose...so unusual in popular fiction these days...beautiful but totally non-pretentious. A sad but lovely story, well told. I'd recommend this book to anyone who wants to escape the mundane stuff that seems to abound these days and get lost in a real, human story. I loved this novel and I look forward to Ms Custance's next one.
