Review

Acclaim for When Hitler Stole Pink Rabbit:

‘… a compassionate introduction to the whole subject of World War II…’ Books for your Children

‘… an extremely exciting adventure story…’ Daily Express

‘… a charming and touching book, often very funny…’ Daily Mail

‘… exact, intelligent and unsentimental.’ Sunday Telegraph

Product Description

Partly autobiographical, this is the third title in Judith Kerr’s internationally acclaimed trilogy of books following the life of Anna through war-torn Germany, to London during the Blitz and her return to Berlin to discover the past…

Berlin is where Anna lived before Hitler, when she was still a German child; before she spoke a word of English, before her family had all become refugees. Long before her happy new existence in London. But Mama is there, dangerously ill. Anna is forced to go back, to deal with questions of life and death, to face old fears, and to discover the past which she has so long shut away.

This conclusion to a beautiful trilogy catches up with Anna and her family a few years after "Bombs on Aunt Dainty". Anna is now happily married and settled in England with a successful career. Circumstances force her to return for a visit to Berlin where she finds a country that is familiar but will never be home again.

A little more grown-up than the second book and a lot more than the first, fans of Judith Kerr and the story of Anna will not be disappointed. The book deals with life after the war and the difficulty of rebuilding a life in a country that has become your home and yet where you will never completely fit in.

Anna's relationship with her family that began to be examined in the second book is looked at in more detail without making the story over-analysed.

Whilst not as compelling and Beautiful a read as 'When Hitler stole Pink Rabbit', the story of Anna is brought to a subtle conclusion whilst still leaving the reader able to imagine how it would continue.

When I read this I re-read the first book of the trilogy and compared to the detail in each book. The first book describes everything through a childs eyes and all the happiness in the atmosphere that only a child could see. The third book shows the world that everyone else knows and how the war affected everyone.

I really enjoyed reading this book but to understand it you must read the first two. The ending is a nice way to finish it off but it could do with a conclusion to the conclusion !

doesn't stand on its own 29 May 2000

As was alread said, this is a fitting end to the series, however it is just that. It doesn't really qualify as a novel in its own right, as the others do. Still, readers of the first two books should read it.

A good book, but not as good as the others. 27 Aug 1998

I thought that this was a wonderful book, and a fitting end, although I don't like the separation between it and the Other Way Around. I highly recommend it, and if any one else really enjoyed it and its predessors please email me.

A small person far away 10 Jun 2003

What a wonderful book! I thought that this was the best of all three. I would like Judith Kerr to write another one even though it's a trilogy.
