Product Description

A Snowman-like animation - Woman; A moving, unsentimental and often humorous take on the traditional story - The Guardian; A 25 minute animated film without words based on the picture book by Peter Collington. The traditional nativity characters feature in the story but the setting is contemporary the plot touching and original. On Christmas Eve a poor old woman plays her accordion in the street. Apart from two children, the passers-by ignore her and by the end of the day she has to sell her accordion to buy some food. Worse is to come. On her way home a thief steals her money. She discovers that he has also vandalised the church - the little Nativity figures lie scattered on the floor and the collection box is empty. The old woman restores order and sets off exhausted towards her caravan. But before long she collapses in the snow. And now the magic begins. The little Nativity figures come to life and carry her safely home. They make sure that her good deeds are rewarded so that in the morning she wakes to the most wonderful Christmas she could ever imagine. Includes the bonus story On Christmas Eve

I'm beginning to think i had dreamt about this film because nobody seems to have watched it. I was clearing away the wrapping paper one Christmas morning when my daughter had gone to her dads and i was feeling sad. The tv was on and this little film i had never heard of came on. It was magical and lifted my spirits!!!! Please watch it.

2 Christmas stories 24 Dec 2009

Of the two animations here, On Christmas Eve is the better one.
A bit like The Snowman animation, both really are wonderful.
Another one to purches is the stop-motion animation DVD of the Russian tale The Fool of the World and his Flying Ship.

'On Christmas Eve' is a beautiful and magical piece of animation that was shown on television many years ago. I have shown this film to my class of nursery children every Christmas since then and they have been captivated by it. So why isn't is screened every year on television? It's the same with 'Granpa' - another fabulous piece of animation directed by the late Diane Jackson. Again, I show it to my 3 and 4 year olds and they are entranced!! And it hasn't even been released on DVD!! Utter madness. Channel 4, hang your heads in shame. 'Granpa' and 'On Christmas Eve' are every bit as good as 'The Snowman' and much better than 'Father Christmas' for the younger viewer. Children in this country are being deprived of superb animation. It's such a terrible shame and makes me want to weep.
