Peter Sellers was undeniably a comic genius. Fact! Shot in the Dark is the first true Clouseau film. Fact! This is a contender for greatest comedy ever. Fact!
Following Clouseau's advice to his subordinate Hercule, when confronted with facts one must reach the inevitable conclusion. In this case the facts tell us that you must purchase this DVD. In the film itself, when faced with the facts concerning the various murders that take place, Clouseau reaches a conclusion all of his own.
Concerning the plot, I'll say no more. Concerning the DVD, I'll say just this, you owe it to yourself to own this one. To forever have this jewel of comedy in your film collection is a real pleasure and privilege. The disc is light on extras but that is hardly the point here. All you need is the film and once its finished just go back back to the beginning and watch it all over again.
One final point, given that one can pick up the six-disc Pink Panther collection for next to nothing these days, you'd be better served by doing just that. You get five Clouseau/Panther films and a special features disc. Be warned however, the collection is short of one essential sequel: The Return of the Pink Panther. Nevertheless, you can always pick that up separately (although that is becoming increasingly difficult these days).

This is one of the silliest films you'll ever see, but it is great entertainment, and that's largely because of Peter Sellers' consistently engaging portrayal of the terminally incompetent Inspector Clouseau. The plot is a nonsense, but there is a whole succession of laugh-out-loud set pieces, and though this is Sellers' film first and foremost, he is very well supported by Herbert Lom , George Sanders (a very suave villain) and Elke Sommer (pretty and fluffy in an appealing sort of way). I saw the film when it came out and fell about laughing, in common with many others in the cinema. It now looks a bit dated, but that can't diminish the quality of the central performances, especially Sellers'.

Never having been a Peter Sellers fan, I bought this title since it was so cheap, and there were several other actors in it that I thought I might like to see - one of them being the talented actress Ann Lynn, but despite being credited, she is neither heard nor seen (she has her head down in her lap, being found after her character has been murdered and therefore could have really been anybody...) and so this was really disappointing for me... However, I still gave the Picture a go, and I have to admit that I found it quite funny in places, though I suspect many would find the comedy a bit 'too' ridiculous to laugh at - at least if you hadn't had a few drinks first!

Also stars a couple of actors who are clearly out of their depth here; Herbert Lom and George Sanders - to name but two, the latter who is looking rather old and tired in this, whereas in total contrast, Lom is decidedly still good-looking and handsome - as he still is today at the ripe old age of 92!!

Good in parts.

It is clearly child of its time. Peter Sellers was unic and this film is i good representantive of Inspector Closeau films.
Some gags in the first movie are still even more unic but this one has its golden moments. Its a movie its better than life;
thats why we look at them. German cute actres Elke Sommer helps the movie nicely and Closeau in love is funny too.My five stars comes obviously from that it brings time back. the time that we tought that it could be possible to see life as comedy. Filmakers today are preparing us to disasters and wars. They dont know how to make comedy thou life is comedy. It can be easily proven.
Plot is not the most important in this film. The story goes smoothly enough. Blake Edwards know how to direct comedy.
