4.0 out of 5 stars south coast spuddler 12 Mar 2007
Format:Hardcover
I love this book and find the story very entertaining even after re-reading it many times. The main character is Graham Marshall who commits a murder in a moment of rage and then finds himself committing more pre-meditated murders to achieve his goals. It's all rather tongue in cheek but the prose style is very engaging and Graham's downfall is delightful even if it is rather predictable. I find myself smiling whilst I read it because Graham is such a naughty boy. I return to this book on a regular basis for comfort reading and I enjoy it every time. I can strongly recommend it as a delightful companion.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant and humorous. 10 Oct 2001
Format:Unbound
This book depicts in humorous fashion how everyone feels at least once in their lives but, probably, calls a halt to that feeling. If you're down or having a hard time, this is the book for you. One that won't make you feel revenge but happiness at the joy of life.

A thoroughly good read. Simon Brett really knows how to slowly increase the tension. A real page turner. Once started it is hard to put down.

Creepy look into the life of a seemingly ordinary man gone mad. ***WARNING*** but never call him "mad". Ironically good ending.

4.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable If Slight Wish Fulfillment 12 Feb 2007

Ever wanted to murder someone? Your boss, your rival, your wife?

Of course not.

But if you'd ever thought of such a thing, you'd get a kick out of this nasty look at a completely unscrupulous, conscienceless cad who finds that murder is just the thing to ensure advancement in business and in life itself. I found this well-written and entertaining, though it lost some steam at the end.

Note: A superior example of the same concept can be found in Donald E. Westlake's "The Ax," which I recommend whole-heartedly.

Simon Brett is at his best with this work. A black humoured account of an individual who, through an accidental murder, is set on the path of elimination. It brought to mind the classic Ealing film, Kind hearts & Coronets wherein an indivdual seeks to remove all those in his path who prevent him gaining his aristocratic rights. In A Shock To The System (clever title) the world of aristocracy is replaced by the corporate world and its machinations. A modern morality tale, the book is blessed with Simon Brett's story-telling skills. Simply the best book I have read in a long time. Give yourself a treat and buy it.
