Product Description

Product Description

Mairi and Sandy live on a lonely Hebridean island, content with each other - despite their lack of children. When Mairi brings home Thomas, a child from the orphanage, Sandy is jealous of Mairi's affection for him and disappointed in the boy's stammer and fragility. With time, Thomas grows in confidence and draws nearer to his foster mother, but still Sandy keeps an emotional distance - until tragedy results in a new understanding.

About the Author

Lillian Beckwith (Lillian Comber) was born in Ellesmere Port, Cheshire, in 1916. She went to live in the Hebrides before the Second World War and stayed there for nearly twenty years, living first on Elgol, Isle of Skye, and later on the nearby and smaller Isle of Soay. Her hilarious initiation into crofting life is captured in the heart warming book 'The Hills is Lonely'. She acquired her own cottage, and living and working on her own croft gave rise to a series of magical Hebridean books such as 'The Sea For Breakfast'. She retired to the Isle of Man, where she died in 2004.

Lillian Beckwith captures everything "island" with this super book. She writes in a way that you can feel you are there with the people in the story. I have nearly all her books and this one is another gem.

A Shine of Rainbows 19 Mar 2012
By kate henderson - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
This is one of my favorite books, simple but worth reading over and over. It takes the reader back to a simpler time, where family values still counted. And how love and patience can transform even the most hard hearted people. Young Thomas is a scared lost boy who is taken in by Mari and her reluctant husband Sandy. Through many trials and ultimately a tragedy, comes a new beginning. Amidst the story is a wonderful description of life on the Hebridean Islands.
