This is still Skyclad; the vocalist is different, but this just brings a different perspective to the vocals. Kevin's vocals tend to be more folky with that slight nasal quality but, as shown by "Ten Little Kingdoms", he can manage the metal style easily.
Best tracks on the album:
* Parliament of Fools - excellent introduction, superb lyrics
* Another Drinking Song (except for the middle)
* Hybrid Blues
Low points:
* Ten Little Kingdoms - potentially this could have been very good, but it feels too rushed.
* The middle bit on "Another Drinking Song"
After the rather unceremonious departure of Mr Walkyier many people believed that it signified the end of this tremendous and original band. They couldn't have been more wrong.
Their last release, No Daylights Nor Heeltaps, whilst being a rehash of some of their older material (given a much folkier twist) showed that they can still deliver and that the loss of Walkyier could actually be a good thing.
As for A Semblance Of Normality, I have had the pleasure of listening to all the tracks through an internet radio station and I must say I am highly impressed. After having listened to No Daylights you could be forgiven for thinking that the band were moving even further away from their metal roots. You could not be more wrong. The new album is very heavy, heavier even than Folkemon to the point that the fiddle is strangely absent in some places (most notably Ten Little Kingdoms) though those that may lament the reduced role that Miss Biddle plays here should be pleased to find that this is somewhat offset by the inclusion of an orchestra (though its use is subtle and does not in any way overwhelm the down tuned guitar work).
There really is something here for fans of Skyclad, both old and new, and is definately a more significant release than Folkemon and is a stronger offering overall. Standout tracks for me include Parliament of Fools and Lightening the Load though everyone will take something different away from this album.
If you're thinking of trying the band for the first time you could do worse than start here - for 'clad veterans you will find this album truly the same but different...
It's all good! :)
