Product Description

For over 40 years, Rose Pepper has kept her own counsel about the story of her past, wanting the truth to stay hidden from her two daughters. But the discovery of some unopened letters threatens to betray all her secrets...

Evacuated to Cornwall during the Second World War, Rose falls in love with a young Czech soldier, stationed at the local US army base, both of them trying to forget that Rose is already engaged to a cold and controlling friend of her family. In the chaotic aftermath of the war, Rose and her lover flee to Prague, only to face a greater danger.

This is an absolutely beautifully-written novel. It tells the story of Rose, a young girl who starts work as a land girl in the second world war. She's engaged to an old family friend, but her heart's not in it, and when she meets a young Czech soldier, she finally realises what it means to fall in love. But of course the war intervenes and throws obstacle after obstacle in the way...

By the end of this book, I had been through every emotion imaginable. It's a truly touching, moving story and I would recommend it to anyone. I found the descriptions of the time particularly good - the author has really conjured up the feel of the era and you get the feeling a lot of research went into writing it. Definitely recommended!

This is a wonderful book - perfect for a relaxing beach holiday, or for reading by a cosy open fire in the depth of winter. Law's writing is very evocative. She writes with great empathy and attention to detail. The story is full of lusious details, with characters you wish you knew personally. A Season of Leaves is an engaging and rewarding wartime story of resilience and fortitude. Thoroughly recommended.

Season of Leaves 4 Jun 2009
Format:Hardcover
I thoroughly enjoyed this book the descriptions of Prague made the place seem very real. 'Ginge' was an amazing character she made you cross because she wouldn't stand up for herself. She seemed easily led but then I suppose life was like that for young women in the forties. She made you wish she had more time with the one love of her life.
