Product Description

“Most people have everything they need to be happy.” The words latched onto some part of Skyla’s brain. She repeated the phrase to herself while she rang up books and stocked shelves. It had a certain resonance to it, but she doubted it was true.

Free-spirit Skyla Plinka has found the love and stability she always wanted in her reliable husband Thomas. Settling into her new family and roles as wife and mother, life in rural Wisconsin is satisfying, but can’t seem to quell Skyla’s growing sense of restlessness. Her only reprieve is her growing friendship with neighbor Roxanne, who has five kids (and counting) and a life in constant disarray – but also a life filled with laughter and love.

Much to the dismay of her intrusive mother-in-law, Audrey, Skyla takes a part-time job at the local bookstore and slowly begins to rediscover her voice, independence and confidence. Throughout one pivotal year in the life of Skyla, Audrey and Roxanne, all three very different women will learn what it means to love unconditionally. With the storytelling ingenuity of Anne Tyler, the writing talent of Jodi Picoult, and the subtlty of Alice Munro, McQuestion offers a satisfying debut that proves she is a gifted portraitist, a natural storyteller and an author to watch.

I loved this book! Really loved it. This was a story I could sink into, and believe me, I did. Every character, even Roxanne's dog, was realistically portrayed. I got attached to all of them--upbeat Gram, cranky Audrey, crazy Roxanne, and Skyla, the young wife and mother trying to figure out her place in the world.

This is one of the few novels I've ever read that made me laugh and cry. There were twists I didn't see coming and characters who surprised me. I know this book is going to be on my mind for a long time. I can't recommend it highly enough.

This is a book I could lend to almost any female friend, and I can see it doing the rounds of Mums-and-toddlers coffee mornings everywhere. It's a nicely written story about life, motherhood and relationships where I think a lot of people will see something of themselves, regardless of the suburban American setting. It reminded me of Anne Tyler and I would say it's a good example of this genre..... which I must admit is not one I am particularly keen on. So, nothing much happens but it's not that kind of book - what does happen as the main character, Skyla, grows and changes as a person is positive and I thought extremely well observed. The same is true of the mother-in-law. The character of warm and chaotic Roxanne, who is the catalyst for much of the change, is also engaging and the ending is a bit of a tear-jerker. Although it's not particularly my kind of book, I enjoyed it and imagine others will love it.

This was another one I was going to buy for the Kindle until I saw it appear on the Amazon Vine newsletter.
A first for me for this author and it definately won't be my last.

I really liked Skyla, but thought her being married to Thomas was completely mismatched. They definately give meaning to the saying "opposites attract". I loved the character of Roxanne and the author wrote her so well, it was almost like I knew her and I did laugh out loud at times.
I was not expecting the twist at the end though, and I got quite teary reading the last couple of chapters and I really felt for all of the characters. It was very sad and emotional.

Overall its actually hard to describe the book or say what category it would fit into, but it was a very enjoyable read. It was only roughly 250 pages but it was the perfect sized read in my opinion.
