Biography

Biography by Stephen Thomas Erlewine
The cliché about David Bowie says he's a musical chameleon, adapting himself according to fashion and trends. While such a criticism is too glib, there's no denying that Bowie demonstrated remarkable skill for perceiving musical trends at his peak in the '70s. After spending several years in the late '60s as a mod and as an all-around music-hall entertainer,… Read more in Amazon's David Bowie Store

BBC Review

“David Bowie’s greatest hits live!” reads the sticker on the attractive packaging of this newly released, but recorded back in 2003, two-CD set. And nobody’s going to be complaining that the promise isn’t delivered, as Bowie – backed by a solid yet flexible band that hits each peak with precision – runs through elegant renditions of his most-pervasive successes. Under Pressure, Rebel Rebel, Ashes to Ashes, Ziggy Stardust, All the Young Dudes: all present and correct.

Like R.E.M.’s recent Live at the Olympia set, A Reality Tour was recorded in Dublin; the crew must come cheap. That, or fans in the Irish capital are simply unbeatable. The latter argument for the recording location is supported somewhat by the accompanying credits: after listing the various musical contributors, the emotionally charged audiences at the Point Depot” are acknowledged. And there’s no doubt those in attendance make themselves heard, though such is the high-quality mixing work on this release that their vociferous appreciation is kept at a distance until such a time as a roar is absolutely key.

The crowd is stirred into its most feverous state when the bona fide classics are aired – the aforementioned, as well as the likes of 1975’s Fame, old favourite The Man Who Sold the World, and Five Years, the opener on 1972’s certifiable collection cornerstone The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders From Mars. But comparably lesser-known selections are received well, too. Battle for Britain (The Letter), which takes clangourous industrial rock on a fly-by of drum‘n’bass, convulses to a singular beat; long-in-limbo effort Bring Me the Disco King, finally released on 2003’s Reality (his last studio album), is down-tempo jazz with tangible nostalgia in its lyrics; and Heathen (The Rays) shows that Bowie could still pen disarmingly direct, affecting pop of a very individual inclination 30-plus years after he started.

With 33 tracks stretching well over two hours, A Reality Tour isn’t exactly suited to single-sitting listening. It’s also far from a genuine greatest hits collection, though it certainly does feature a number of Bowie’s most-loved songs. But it is a great document of one of the world’s most inspirational recording artists – and performers – proving that age can’t quench the man’s desire to create, communicate and, ultimately, entertain. A maverick talent whose place in the pop annals was assured long ago, Bowie’s continuing hunger sets a fabulous example for the up-and-coming could-be-‘Heroes’ crowd. --Mike Diver

Awesome genious... 21 Feb 2010
Format:Audio CD
Loved the DVD (Bowie at his absolute best) and naturally the CD is the same. Great song selection, great performances, great band (especialy Gail, Mike and Campbell) and a truly great singer at the top of his game. David - we miss you, come back and do it again please?

Saw this tour a few days after this set was recorded in Dublin.I was at the NEC Birmingham. This was in every way one of the best gigs I've ever been to,DB absolutely on top form.Got the DVD of this show when out came out a while back now,but always hoped it would come out on CD with the edited songs put back in.Well they are and this is very much a greatest hits live,he has with him one of the best bands he's had and the whole double disc set is pure Bowie gold throughout.Adding the excellent Gerry Leonard on guitar was a masterstroke addition to an already superbly balanced band Bowie had.The added tracks such as a personal DB favourite of mine,'Old Dogs Bomb The Moon' as well as 'China Girl' complete this super set.Over two hours of classics and tracks from the then current album 'Reality' certainly one of DB's best.If your a Bowie fan you'll have to have this,if not yet get this and hear just how fantastic he is live.David Bowie is an all time rock legend, one of the most consistent and original artists, and live one of the greatest there,s ever been,he enjoys it he resonds so well with his audience. This all comes through here and thats for me what makes it a must have release, played I'm sure for years to come.

Superb live album 23 Dec 2009
Format:Audio CD
Yes this is money for old rope for us Bowie die-hards, but I'm sure gonna end up listening to this on my ipod a hell of a lot more than the DVD.

There is no denying the music on offer here. Bowie's voice is rich and seemingly fully recovered after quitting smoking at the start of the decade. His band ranks up there with one of his best with each track perfectly judged and represented. Bowie shied away from performing his greatest hits in the ninties as he felt it detracted from the work he was doing at the time. He later confessed he didn't have the confidence in his new work. With the creative return to form of "Heathen" and "Reality" under his belt, Bowie here mixes old and new effortlessly. Each one a certified classic.

If you don't own the DVD, you NEED this album. If you do own the DVD, you don't have to buy it, but that's no reason to mark down a masterclass in live performance.

Poorly packaged and a blatant cash in
This 2CD live album from the 2003 Reality tour is nothing more than a blatant cash in. The DVD release in 2004 was pretty good but this album is a total waste of time and money. Read more

What can I say...I was there, and this album catches all the magic of those 2 nights in Dublin. A fabulous live album.
