Very Good 21 July 2006
Format:Hardcover
This is almost the ideal of a foreign language reader with text, notes, exercises and vocabulary all in one volume. I would say, however, that it's not a book for beginners. There are 34 selections of two or three pages from different genres, all of a manageable level of difficulty. Each piece is accompanied by notes, a simplified version of the text, which is very easy to read after the main passage and allows you to get a real sense that you are reading fluently, and word and grammar exercises. It's possible to get recordings of the selections from the International Book Centre.

Excellent for Advanced Students Learning Arabic 19 Jun 2000
By Bassam Darkazally, Ph.D. - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
Ziadeh is a very distinguished Arab auther who published several books to help people learn Arabic. His book Reader in Modern Literary Arabic is one of the best books for advanced students that I have read during the past 30 years of my teaching Arabic language in North America. The book is a collection of short Arabic texts from the best Arabic literary works, classical and modern. This book is recommended to students who have studied structured standard program in Arabic, not to the casual learner/beginner or intermediate. Teaching / reading this book is a pleasure to students as well as instructors. Actually, I would recommend the reading of this book to Arabic speaking people as well. In general, books on learning advanced Arabic are scarces, let alone a good one.
