Sadly A Quiet Riot is neither a tribute to, nor a new album from, the once acclaimed Californian poodle rockers. But, cheer up--this collection of downbeat indie and the occasional dance track may lack the punch (and the hairspray) but that doesn't mean it isn't great. As an indie album first and foremost the selection on A Quiet Riot is hard to beat. Thankfully it avoids all the "chill-out" clichés and heavy-rotation britpop "classics", that tend to dominate other compilations, to deliver over two hours of inspired music from everyone that's anyone--from Goldfrapp to Wheat, the Reindeer Section to alt-country favourites Lambchop via Embrace, the Beta Band and Arab Strap. Acoustic and folk-influenced numbers come courtesy of the usual suspects--Badly Drawn Boy, Turin Brakes, Mojave 3, Kings of Convenience et al, while current indie darlings--Mull Historical Society, Simian and the Bees also feature with recent singles and even better album tracks. But some of the best tracks are from artists you really wouldn't expect to find on a compilation. Bands such as the sadcore outfit Low add a beautiful, sombre tone to the collection along with the spaced-out rock of the Zephyrs and the breathtaking orchestral influenced "Staralfur" from Sigur Ros. A Quiet Riot just goes to show, there's really no need to play it safe--a sentiment I'm sure Quiet Riot would only be too pleased to echo.--Caroline Butler

Being a sucker for this sort of subdued indie stuff, i saw the likes of Kings of Convenience, Turin Brakes and Nick Drake and threw it straight in the shopping basket. Initial reaction - pretty good, same old same old? Au Contraire, some real gems nestling amongst some already familiar faves. This album has a song for every mood.i can honestly say that it has not left my car since i bought it. Watch out for David Kitt

I guess this is the indie equivalent of "Ibiza Chillout!". There are tracks you'll know (Oasis, Moby), others that you should have known by now (Nick Drake) and some you'll be glad to have learnt (Kings of Convenience).
Seamlessly stuck together, a quality compilation that will have you hitting the skip back button time and time again. If you like good music and support new innovative bands this is a must have.
Could have been a bit more cutting edge, but is suppose some old faves help to break through. Quiet Riot gets 4 instead of 5 only because I have some track already.
Watch out for the Zephers - Setting Sun, how could it have gone so unnoticed?

Quiet is the New Loud

A good compilation (serious!) joining some of the best indie bands of the last years, "A Quiet Revolution" is a sleeper effort but a whole lot better one than most of the overrated mainstream junk around. For a double album, this record is quite good, delivering a collection of subtle, captivating and low-key music that should get more attention. Sometimes it`s just too quiet, though, and a couple of more electronic-oriented songs wouldn`t be a bad idea, since most of the tracks are acoustic. Highlights include work by Badly Drawn Boy, Wheat, Moby, Goldfrapp, and Mull Historical Society, while Everything But The Girl, Embrace and I Am Kloot present filler moments. Personally, I would add a few names here, such as Gomez, Ladytron, Sparklehorse, JJ72, Air or The Experimental Pop Band, but this is still a fine selection nonetheless.

My favourite "quiet" compilation

This is a collection of music that is smooth but engaging (i.e. not dull and drab background stuff but stimulating pop music that's actually uplifting). It includes many surprises. It contains a track by Oasis, for example, that fit in perfectly: A mellow acoustic number under the Burt Bacharach spell. It was an eye-opener to me (who had always found Oasis a bit too arrogant). What's more, the double album runs perfectly together and provides continuous pleasure. Not once have I skipped a track while listening to the album. Everyone I've played this album to tends to like it. Even my two daughters (now age 5-6) have always loved this stuff when we are having a quiet moment, drawing pictures or playing a boardgame. The compilation is also ideal as a winddown in your sleepy hours after a night out or, alteratively, as a "fresh" start of a Sunday morning. In short, this is a faultless compilation that perfectly lives up to its title. It contains only music from 1998-2001 (Sigur Ros, Moby, Goldfrapp, Lambchop etc.) except for three tracks (Everything But the Girl - 1993, the Lemonheads - 1992, and one dash of timeless psychedelia, Nick Drake - 1970)
