Book 1 in the Regency Rakes Trilogy.

Robert, Lord Bradleigh, is a rakish earl with a recently arranged betrothal to a lovely young girl he barely knows. Emily Townsend is an impoverished spinster employed as a companion to his grandmother, the formidable dowager countess. Robert agrees to help his grandmother find a husband for the beautiful Emily. But once he comes to know the charms of his grandmother's companion, he begins to regret his hasty engagement.

This sparkling tale will take you from the Pump Room at Bath to the ballrooms of London as the unexpected and undeniable attraction between Robert and Emily blossoms into something more … something that could put one of them in danger.

5.0 out of 5 stars A lovely read. 4 July 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I downloaded this novella as it was so cheap to buy and I thought I had nothing to lose.

I'm so glad to have discovered this author. A great read! This is a fast paced story, but inspite of that the characters were well developed. If you are a fan of Georgette Heyer you will enjoy this book. This a true romance without the addition of too much sexual content, which I prefer.

Just one thing, Emily uses the term 'gender' at one point of the story, which is not in keeping with the period, but it didn't spoil my enjoyment of the book.

Well to e author for writing such an engaging and fun read. I'm definitely a fan now and can't wait to read more of her books.

3.0 out of 5 stars Nonsense, but charming 24 July 2011
By Graham R. Hill VINE VOICE
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
There isn't much to this really, but it's a pleasant enough read. You know what is going to happen and it happens; albeit in a nice, cosy manner. Probably the greatest interest is spotting the various anachronisms. The one that irritated me the most was a character referring metaphorically to lemmings rushing to their destruction about a century and a half before Walt Disney mistakenly convinced everyone that they committed mass suicide. In the Regency period the appropriate misconception would actually have been relating to the sudden appearance of the rodents - they were believed to fall from the sky - not to their demise.

Also anyone with the slightest grasp of London's geography will be puzzled by the main characters travelling there from Bath via Hampstead Heath. I know that Hounslow Heath is now an airport, but that's no reason to write it out of history.

5.0 out of 5 stars Entertaining Romp 6 Feb 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Usually not a fan of this genre but found this novel a lot of fun. It is full of the usual tropes of a damsel in distress, a fortune found and nearly lost due to evil machinations of various parties and a pair of lovers who very nearly end up with the wrong people...

Good fun read!

5.0 out of 5 stars Highly readable Regency Romance 1 Oct 2011
By E. WOOLSTON TOP 1000 REVIEWER
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
As a fan of good Regency romances I wasn't expecting this to be as good as it was but I thoroughly enjoyed it. The characters are very likeable, the heroine is not 16 with 'eyes too large for her face' (a la Ms Cartland) and the hero is not withdrawn and grumpy. Instead there was plenty to smile about and a few embarrassing moments when I laughed out loud (don't read it in a public place!) and enough research by the author to make it fit well into the Regency period.

5.0 out of 5 stars Light Romantic Story 19 Sep 2011
By Joanne
Format:Kindle Edition
I love historical romances and am delighted to have found a new to me author to follow. I got this eBook free from Amazon but I am now gradually buying Candice Hern's backlist. This is a light romantic story with no sexual descriptions. The book reminded me strongly of Georgette Heyer books, so if you are fan of hers, as I am, then this is a must read. It is excellent for escaping from real life for awhile.

4.0 out of 5 stars Lovely read 18 Jun 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
My summary of the book - Emily is a companion to Robert's grandmother who isn't very happy when she hears about his betrothal. His grandmother starts to plot which involves taking Emily to London where she can enjoy a season. Soon Emily is the toast of the town and attracting the attention of all the gentlemen but all this attention causes trouble to come knocking.

Thoughts on the characters - Emily is happy to stay in the background and continue her life as a companion but when the dowager countess wants to go to London Emily finds herself in the forefront and unsure how to deal with it. She doesn't want to feel indebted to anyone and finds it more difficult when the dowager wants to give her a new wardrobe. Plus she doesn't realise what type of reaction she would get from the gentlemen of the town as she is beautiful but didn't think she would receive any attention because of her background. She is also confused about her feelings for Robert.
Robert in turn is very confused as he has settled to marry a woman but when he spends more time with Emily and sees how beautiful she is on the inside and outside he starts to question his actions. But his good honour gets in the way and he is determined to follow the path he has chosen even if losing something.

Thoughts on the writing style - Very easy and amusing writing, I was able to follow easily and it very engaging.

Overall thoughts - Really lovely story that grabbed me and made me smile. The dowager countess is very amusing which helps the story along and I really enjoyed the interaction between Emily and Robert.

4.0 out of 5 stars Better than expected 12 Jun 2011
By volone
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This book had a genuine charm, and was much better than I thought it would be. Of course, a couple of unwelcome Americanisms crept in here and there, but the period detail seemed well observed and there was some sparkle in the wit and dialogue.

One thing the synopsis didn't make clear is that this is part of a series of books about a group of friends of whom Lord Bradfield is the first to get married. Look for A Change of Heart (A Regency Romance) and An Affair of Honor (A Regency Romance) for the companion books.

Light-hearted fun, easy to read.

4.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable................... 24 April 2011
By lonegunwoman TOP 1000 REVIEWER
Format:Mass Market Paperback
This novel surprised, a light romance great read if your looking for something to fill a hour or two. It has a few threads that keep the interest there.

Emily is a paid companion to the grandmother of Robert, a Lord. It is known that Emily's mother was the daughter of an Earl, her father died of a broken heart after his wife whom he eloped with died, leaving Emily with nothing, cut off from her mothers family.

Robert visits his grandmother to inform her of his coming marriage to Augusta, to her horror, as her family are not to his grandmothers liking. Fate has dealt a blow as Robert is drawn to Emily, he comes to her rescue when her uncle cause's her distress at an evening's engagement. This and other shows of affection are noticed. Further to this she is courted by Robert's close friend which Robert finds he is not pleased with.

After further details are revealed at Robert's investigation, Emily's uncle takes drastic action, as he faces ruin. Robert is forced to take action.

An entertaining few hours.
