Book Description

When Selena Dillon is caught in an assassination attempt on her planet’s ruler, she finds herself sentenced to twenty-five years servitude in the most feared military force, the Penal Regiments. Much to her surprise she enjoys the harsh military life and is quickly selected for officer training.
But something’s wrong, worlds are falling silent. There’s no cry for help and no warning, just a sudden eerie silence. When a flotilla of ships is despatched to investigate they exit hyperspace to find themselves facing a massive alien armada. Outnumbered and outgunned the flotilla fight a rearguard action, allowing one of their number to slip away and warn mankind.
As worlds fall in battle, and mankind’s fleets are decimated, Selena is selected to lead a team of the Penal Regiment’s most battle-hardened veterans, in a last ditch attempt to destroy the aliens’ home world. If she fails mankind is doomed. Little does Selena know that one of her crew is a psychopathic killer and another is the husband of his victim.
Can she hold her team together, get them to their target and succeed in the attack? Selena knows that if she fails then there will be nothing at all left to go home to.

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb Science Fiction 13 Feb. 2014
Format:Paperback
The Queen executes Selena Dillon’s mother. The small child witnesses the dastardly deed. Thereafter, Selena’s life goal is revenge. Years later, as a member of the resistance, she finally gets the chance, but the plot is foiled and she finds herself before the Judge. She proudly declares herself guilty. The jury agrees sentencing Selena and her crew to death. However, since the Federation is upgrading the military, the insurgents are offered the opportunity to serve in the Penal Regiments until they die in their ranks or are discharged after 25 years of service. The Penal Regiments is the most feared and respected branch of the military. One had to be either insane or desperate to join their ranks. If one joined this particular branch of the space corps, their previous lives would be erased. They lost their past, family, and even their personalities. Few ever survived. So when the Judge inquired, “Selena Dillon, your choice?” Selena said, “I choose the Penal Regiments.”

So begins Mark Iles’ Darkening Stars Book I: A Pride of Lions. Selena determinedly endures the rigors of boot camp; that few survive. High command notices her leadership skills and she is placed in officer training school where she graduates at the head of her class. While all of this is happening, the Federation and all its human colonies are threatened by the Manta, an insect species bent on mankind’s destruction.

With a dramatic flair rivaling Robert Heinlein’s Starship Troopers, Iles has developed a braided plot centering around Selena Dillon’s career in the Penal Regiment as she faces situations that could result in the demise of every man, woman, and child in the universe. The Darkening Stars series is excellent fiction that a true sci-fi addict won’t want to miss.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great writing, intriguing 27 Jan. 2014
By Katy
Format:Paperback
Earth is no longer the sole planet of man, and with all the new advances in travel, visiting other planets is an everyday occurrence.

I quickly became engrossed in the story as Selena and two other revolutionaries attempt an assassination on the wicked queen of their planet Capulet. They almost make it but are stopped by some sort of chemical that makes it impossible to enter the door to the queen's chamber.

Selena and her accomplices face trial and are forced to choose death or servitude in a penal training camp that is actually part of the armed service. This branch of the corps is so ruthless some chose death instead of continuing through even though when/if they finish their twenty-five year service they will be pardoned from their crimes.

I'm mesmerized as the plot continues; it's intriguing and keeps me guessing. There are a few R rated parts that gave pause but not enough to make me stop reading. I wanted to know what was going to happen.

There comes a time when Selena choses promotion for her fierce and powerful service over being released. She is called upon to head a secret mission, and so she and a crew of equals and misfits set off on a ship of all ships to take out the planet that seeks to destroy millions of innocent lives.

The only part I questioned, as I'm not a reader of horror, was the low life of one of the characters. I begin my reviews with a 5 star and deduct what seems out of my own personal needs as a reader. If possible I would take away ¼ a point for the evil Za'an - what a creepy, creepy, evil man. I'm not sure why he was put on the mission.

I must add that the story is set up for a very interesting sequel.

5.0 out of 5 stars Cracking good read 1 Sept. 2013

I feel guilty that I downloaded this book for nothing. Its a book a read in on sitting which is about the best review you can give a book. The author is ex Royal Navy and so am I so I got all his jack speak. Its like star ship troopers and that's not a bad thing. The story rolls along well and in the end you want to read more. I hear that there will be another two and I have asked for a pre book on both. enjoy the book I did

5.0 out of 5 stars Sparkling sci fi 3 Jun. 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Put the excitement of Flash Gordon together with the action of Star Wars, make your lead character a feisty go-get-’em young woman and you’ve got this sci-fi thriller from Mark Iles.
It’s fast-paced, involving and at times breath-taking in both its main narrative and the sub-plots. So, if you want to feel like you’re on a hair-raising ride on a starship, get the order in and prepare to be taken to galaxies far, far away. When you put it down you’ll wonder how everyday life on Earth can be so mundane.

5.0 out of 5 stars A future which could become reality. 17 Mar. 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Don't make the mistake of thinking this book is set in Africa. Far from it—the characters in this novel traverse deep space far away from the planet Earth, which has been damaged by scientists. Just like a real situation on the latest space shuttle, where the astronauts take turns in reaching for the microphone hanging in the air before speaking, the trainee characters in the novel share their experiences in the omnipresent moment. The story sets a scene which resembles a movie, in that the reader grasps the bigger picture as well as each player's perspective.
In The Pride of Lions, the reader gets insights into each character during the intensive training, the unfolding of events, and the battles against alien creatures in their struggle to stay alive against overwhelming odds.
Mark Iles' writing transported me into a future which could so easily become reality.
