Biography

Along with June Christy, Helen O'Connell, and Julie London, Chris Connor epitomized cool jazz singing in the 1950s. Influenced by Anita O'Day, the torchy, smoky singer wasn't one for aggression. Like Chet Baker on the trumpet or Paul Desmond and Lee Konitz on alto sax, she used subtlety and restraint to their maximum advantage. At the University of Missouri, Connor (who had studied ... 5.0 out of 5 stars Portrait of a genius 12 Mar 2002
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com

This has always been my favorite Chris Connor album. I wore it out when it first came out and it got me through my college years, when everyone in the dorm borrowed it. Chris is at her most stylistic and imaginative here both in the performances and the selection of songs. She is backed by a luscious variety of great jazz musicians playing crackerjack arrangements. With everything recorded razor-edge sharp. This is one of her few album covers to clearly show her. Was she camera shy? If so, why. As you can see, she was beautiful--tall, blonde, charismatic. Still is. This is a C.D. for all times, an album among the best ever recorded by any singing artist.

4.0 out of 5 stars A great album with questionable remastering . . . 18 Aug 2007
By Anthony J. Williams - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
Performance-wise this is an outstanding, essential Chris Connor album. I do, however, have a few quibbles with this reissue. Most notably, there is a kind of buzzy electronic sound present throughout some of the songs, such as Where Flamingos Fly and All Too Soon. (I wonder if the import Atlanic version has the same sonic problem as this Collector's Choice issue?) Also, I've always been a bit bothered by some of the notes that Ms. Connor sings on All Too Soon. She doesn't come in quite high enough on the notes that fall on the words "part" and "affair"). Whether it is intentional improvisation or because she is unfamiliar with the melody, it has always bothered me a bit.
Those little quibbles aside, what you have here is not only a excellent Chris Connor album, but an essential purchase for anyone who enjoys jazz/pop vocals. This album stands as one of many examples of what an artist who loves her art sounds like. It's the real deal.
