This is one of 3 books that concern the family of Eleni Gatsoyiannis, the first book is written by Nicholas Gage, and simply entitled 'ELENI'
'A PLACE FOR US' is the 2nd book, by the same Author, (who is the son of Eleni) and the 3rd book is written by Nicholas' daughter (also called Eleni) The first 2 books by Nicholas Gage are fantastic, you can't bear to put them down, and the 3rd book, by Eleni Gage, completes a long and fascinating journey with the family of this remarkable woman who anyone reading the books will come to love, Eleni Gatsoyiannis and her story will live with you for ever.
I reccomend these 3 books to everyone.

I read this book after reading the story of 'Eleni', which precedes it. I found it easy to read and very interesting. It was great to find out what happened to Eleni's children after they moved to America and was interesting to see what life was like in America in the 50's. We find out more about Christos's, Eleni's husband, character and what motivated him to advise Eleni to stay in Greece and protect the house. It was also interesting to read about immigrants to a new country trying to fit in to a new way of life and yet at the same time holding onto their own culture. I found it fasinating as I had immersed myself in that first culture in 'Eleni' so had a good understanding of it and could then see how hard it was to balance the two in a new country. If you enjoyed 'Eleni' it is well worth going on to read this and complete the story.

In this book Nick Gage takes up the story where his book about his mother, Eleni, ended. He tells the story of how he and his siblings reached safety in civil war ravaged Greece and eventually found their way to America to join their father, whom he hardly knew. From there he writes about how over the years he gradually 'found' his father and came to love him and to understand him, how the whole family worked hard to build their American dream and find peace and happiness. He also relates his crusade as an adult to track down and confront his mother's murderers, which is at times as harrowing as the original story of Eleni but it was clearly something Nick absoloutely had to do.
If like me you enoyed his book 'Eleni' (disturbing though the story is) you will want to read A Place for Us to discover what happened to the children of Eleni as they grew up in their new country. Nick Gage is a great writer, always easy to read, yet perceptive and enlightening. I'm not one given to emotion but at times this tale of their struggles brought me near to tears! Having many Greek friends myself it was especially charming to see how the Greek attitudes and traditions still prevalent in the 'old country' stamped themselves upon the American Gage family despite having an ocean between new and old homes.Funny, characterful and warmly entertaining. Highly recommended.
