Tyler James has an incredible voice, with a expansive range and effortless transitions from low to high notes. While his voice is exceptional, he also knows how to use it: his phrasing is perfection. Not one for unnecessary vocal gymnastics, when Tyler hits the falsetto, it's for a reason and it opens your ears and your heart. Tyler tells you his story not just with his lyrics, but also his use of tone and pitch; not dissimilar to his great friend, Amy Winehouse. For example, he brings a heart-breaking tone to "Heart Shaped Hole" and "I Don't Give a Damn", as if he holding back tears and already raw from crying. James clearly doesn't just lay down track - he thinks about the lyrics, emotion, mood and musical arrangement and has the ability to add depth to the proceedings with his singing.

A Place I Go gets better with each listen. If I were to by hyper-critical, I feel that he stretches a lyrical metaphor a little too far in "Friendly Fire" and some of the musical arrangements can start to sound a little bit samey, especially in the intros. Played on a proper hi-fi unit, the recording quality can come up a little short - a problem with most published music now as the industry seems to be focused on lower-quality mp3 format - more of a general gripe than one specifically at this album. Regarding "A Place I Go", I can't find any substantial faults.

I'm very pleased that he recorded his cover of Higher Love. I always loved Steve Winwood's song, but Tyler's version is even better.

A really good album which I am happy to recommend.

Like every other reviews: the album sounds better and better after each listen. Apart from 'Single Tear', there are a few other tracks that sound great too e.g. 'Same Old Song', 'Worry about you', 'No Comedown', 'Friendly Fire' and 'Higher Love'. Personally, I prefer his normal voice than 'falsetto', which is husky and distinctive.

Watched Tyler on the VOICE and was always very impressed - thought he was pretty cool and classy. Well that's how the cd is too. Considering he has written most of the tracks I think he is a real talent.

I'm rapidly approaching my forties and a great fan of music. I normally listen to numerous established artists such as Stevie Wonder, Jamiroquai, Earth Wind & Fire, Alicia Keys, Corinne Bailey Rae, Maxwell, Anita Baker, Al Green, Paul Weller etc ... Tyler James has taken me by surprise; I stumbled across him on You Tube some time after glimpsing him on 'The Voice'. He's a remarkable artist and a revelation. I have bought both of his albums and think he would be my desert island disc, if I had to choose. After more than a year of listening to him, I can't get enough ... looking forward to the next album (please!). I have hundreds of albums by great artists of our times; but I've got to say - Tyler is up there - he stands his ground with the best of them. I never write reviews although I've been an Amazon customer for a decade, but I am compelled to review this album as I want to send encouragement to such a great artist - please keep writing and singing songs - you are incredibly good! You were good on the Voice, but your albums are in another dimension. Five stars out of five doesn't seem enough for this masterpiece.

I have enjoyed this when i first played it and even more at my second play. Tyler has a great voice and this misses out on 5 stars because the recording production is in places weak but his voice overcomes these frailties. He should follow this with a album of hit covers to show off his ability more.

I'd like Tyler since he appeared on The Voice a few years back, and whilst I wanted Leanne to win I knew Tyler would do well and looked forward to his album. For some reason though I didn't buy it for ages! No idea why, and I wish I'd got it sooner as it's just fab! He has just a brilliant voice and tone to his singing. Hits the high notes so well then transitions to the lower ones easily. I think the album is very Justin Timerlake-esqe, especially track 1 (Single Tear) but the whole album has it's own feel to it too. It's very mature, easy to listen to and just lovely.
My highlights are Single Tear, Same Old Song, Worry About You & Higher Love (which still gives me goosebumps). No low notes on the album. Where's his next album? Don't hesitate to buy this album, you'll love it.

Way above average pop, the album sounds better and better after each listen. The mix of beautiful, tragic and then inspirational lyrics really do justice to Tyler's integrity, honesty and class as an artist and also to our intelligence as listeners. Worth every penny of the purchase, I hope Tyler does super well from this album, and I look forward to his future offerings.
