This book really delivers. I bought it because I live in rural Thailand, am surrounded by countryside chock a block full of birds and after many years decided it would be interesting to know the names of the bird species around me and a little bit more about them.

The great thing about this book (in my opinion) is that it is for ‘normal’ people rather than just specialist bird watching fanatics. It is well laid out with each page has a photo and description of 2 birds. The photo’s throughout are have been really well selected making identifying of bids very easy and the description makes it very clear what the key characteristics of each bird, how to distinguish one bird from others within its family grouping, where it normally feeds, what parts of Thailand it can been seen in, when it is normally present etc. It’s all very clear and precise. The general introduction to birds and bird watching in Thailand is also very informative and helpful.

The big plus of this book is that it is very easy to navigate around because the book has illustrated page corner tabs with silhouettes most closely matching the bird you may have seen (e.g., herons, egrets and storks –ducks- waders- pigeon, doves and parrots etc.). This gets you to the page that contains the family group of bird you may have seen very quickly and easily through visual rather than family group name recognition, and is a real benefit for the uninitiated of the bird world (like I was before I got this book). Once at the bird group page the photographs and descriptions very quickly allow you to identify the bird you have seen.

A rather thin random collection of birds of Thailand. It is by no means comprehensive. Having bought most of the books on the subject I found the following book to the be the best.

Birds of South-East Asia (Field Guide to) [Craig Robson]

There is one specifically on Thailand by the same author but its 11 years.

Neat little book that fits easily into the pocket. Admittedly short on number of birds included but good for a general reference with excellent photographs of the birds.
