Three years after the beautifully folky 'Veedon Fleece' Van released what is certainly his funkiest, most R'n'B recording. The contrast between two consecutive Van albums is nowhere else greater and, thankfully, is truly welcome.

The opening track takes a couple of minutes of funky guitar and wurlitzer piano to start, and, when it does, a feast of blaring horns, Purdie-esque shuffle and Van at his grittiest is the treat in store...and hence most of the subsequent six songs.

This is pure soul, and no single track disappoints. Sometimes reminiscent of earlier tracks like 'Domino', 'Caravan' and 'I Will Be There' but always with a New Orleans edge - presumably thanks to the co-production and prominent piano of the great Dr John (Mac Rebbenack) - this is a joyously up-beat, but oft-ignored, Van classic and deserves to nestle between 'Veedon Fleece' and 'Into the Music' on your record shelf (if, like me, you don't own 'Wavelength!)

Not considered one of Van’s classics, Period Of Transition does have its charms. You Gotta Make It Through The World is a mid-tempo ballad with prominent sax and It Fills You Up also has nice sax and piano flourishes with R&B style backing vocals. A heavenly soprano choir opens The Eternal Kansas City before Van takes up the line “excuse me do you know the way to Kansas City” for a mellow, laid back groove. The pace picks up for Joyous Sound, a bouncy gospel number, while the rhythmic Flamingos Fly romps on nicely and is my favorite here for its catchy hook. Transition is far from being Morrison’s best album and is quite average by his high standards of song-craft, but it is nevertheless enjoyable overall with some outstanding songs. I recommend it to Morrison completists rather than the novice intent on investigating the work of this poetic genius.

Whilst certainly not his best work I believe 'A Period of Transition' contains material that ranks amongst his most compelling, and is far from the mediocre Van that we're led to believe. I remember him playing tracks from this on the Old Grey Whistle in the mid-seventies (where are the tapes BBC ?) and particularly loving 'The Eternal Kansas City'. On buying the album I also discovered 'Cold Wind in August' and the album is worth buying for these two tracks alone. Why they never get mentioned or anthologised I don't understand. At least half the album is essential Van and amongst all his albums, it is probably one of the ones I play most.
