Three years after the beautifully folky 'Veedon Fleece' Van released what is certainly his funkiest, most R'n'B recording. The contrast between two consecutive Van albums is nowhere else greater and, thankfully, is truly welcome.
The opening track takes a couple of minutes of funky guitar and wurlitzer piano to start, and, when it does, a feast of blaring horns, Purdie-esque shuffle and Van at his grittiest is the treat in store...and hence most of the subsequent six songs.
This is pure soul, and no single track disappoints. Sometimes reminiscent of earlier tracks like 'Domino', 'Caravan' and 'I Will Be There' but always with a New Orleans edge - presumably thanks to the co-production and prominent piano of the great Dr John (Mac Rebbenack) - this is a joyously up-beat, but oft-ignored, Van classic and deserves to nestle between 'Veedon Fleece' and 'Into the Music' on your record shelf (if, like me, you don't own 'Wavelength!)
