"'...this is the iconography of a people called Palestine... each image reveals and poses their whole question.' Graham Usher"

About the Author

John Tordai has been photographing Palestinians (and Israelis) for close on 20 years. He was in Gaza in the early 1980s, before it became the fashionable haunt of journalists and TV crews. He returned during the exhilarating early years of the Palestinian intifada - when all seemed possible - and stuck around as the uprising sank into a trench warfare of Israeli siege, Palestinian violence and political stalemate. And he was in place to watch the entree of the 'peace process', as embodied by the return of Yassir Arafat and the remnants of the Palestine Liberation Army to Gaza in 1994 and the slow, deformed birth of the Palestinian Authority there and, later, in the West Bank. This is his second book and the emphasis is on the period since 1993. Graham Usher is Palestine correspondent for the Economist and Middle East International. He is also the author of Palestine in Crisis (Pluto Press, London 1995 and 1997) and Despatches from Palestine (Pluto Press, London, 1999).
