I have read several of Barbara Nadel's books and liked them. But the main thing that this book reveals is that she really doesn't know very much about Turkey. In particular I found her saying that "efendi" means "prince" irritating. I have lived in Turkey for over 50 years and the only way I have come across the use of efendi was its attachment to the name of a person like a janitor. It may occasionally mean a gentleman but never a prince. She should use her Turkish-English dictionary more often.

The author has worked up her characters over the previous 8 books and so it must be daunting to read one of the later series of books in isolation without previous knowledge. I wonder what it would be like to read an Agatha Christie late series Poirot without knowing his little foibles? Baffling, like the plot.
If you are a first time Barbara Nadel reader try Belshazzar's Daughter, A Chemical Prison or Arabesk.
If you have read a few of the series you will love this. I have not visited Istanbul and crossed the old Galata bridge or walked around Sultanahmet, but I intend to.
Barbara Nadel deserves success and her books deserve a television series. More murders than Midsummer and a lot more action than Wallander in a setting that is completely different to good old western Europe. This is a gripping book, with a free travel and culture guide thrown in!

I am a Nadel fan but this novel although quickly read,does not compare well to the rest of the series.At times the plot is just a bit too incredible(yes i know its fiction) but all the previous novels do have a touch of gritty realisim in them.In all this book is a quick easy read but lacks the magic that the others in the series have.
