An INCREDIBLE Farewell Album 22 April 2010
By Speedy - Published on Amazon.com
This was to be Steve Harris' last Zaum Cd before passing away (recently). And it is short of a masterpiece. The Cd is really a double cd (1 in the studio and the other live). Both superbly recorded and filled to the brim with the futuristic free 'jazz'/ avant / prog music we've come to expect from Zaum. The live cd is particularly a revelation as the compositions/improvisations allow for a clearer emphasis on Harris drumming work. As always with Zaum, there is a blurry line between spontaneous music and pre-recorded or composed/structured material. At times you can hear the influence of English prog rock (there is a fantastic Fripp influenced ambiance in some of the pieces although everything is MUCH more busy) and of the European free jazz scene. But Harris stays away from standing on any secure ground. Yet everything has a musical logic and a dynamism that just keeps the listener attentive all the way though these 2 exemplary Cds. A pity we will not have anymore new material from this important innovator.
